What Iโve heard about genderfluid identity have seemed more like transvestism re-classified as a pseudo-gender identity: someone with one binary gender occasionally letting their androgynous or gender-bender side out. But instead of being closeted, they built a new closet for themselves.

Also, a funny asymmetry I noticed: When sexing a personโs body, people focus on masculine features. A lack thereof is perceived as female. When sexing a personโs clothes, though, people focus on feminine features. A lack thereof is perceived as male.

The idea that the media sensationalizes sex transition the same way it does cosmetic surgery makes perfect sense to me though. I have the feeling that todayโs medical technology wonโt measurably feminize me enough. Iโve been too testosterone-poisoned.
Chapter 3 is making me conflicted too. The idea that the manโwoman, beautifulโugly, and cisโtrans class dichotomies themselves are all โartificialโ feels too radical. Their degree and specifics change per culture, but IMO they are emergent properties of society; man made it, but itโs not manmade.
On the other hand, she also claims that trans people are โonly a hormone prescription awayโ from being perceived as the opposite sex, which is overly optimistic IMO; some secondary sex features (facial features, shoulder width) can never be altered, or only by extremely invasive procedures.
She also points out that mainstream media always exoticizes trans women as โdress-up, fake womenโ and being โactually menโ, and ignores trans men entirely. Though this bias is less prominent in 2025, even media supposedly for trans people hate depicting โnormalโ trans people in general.
Feeling conflicted after Chapter 2. On one hand, Serano rightfully criticizes the trans-exclusivity of TERFism (as in, its old, feminist origins, as observed in โMichigan Womynโs[sic] Music Festivalโ) which is also regurgitated in the โgenderweirdโ talking points of today.
