Starmer isn't the problem, it's this entire government and everyone in it. That's why when they get around to replacing Starmer it won't actually change anything.

Tried that & everything vet suggested. My cat's a rescue & very sensitive. Vets have been helpful in giving me the worming & flea tablets she needs but she needs claws cut & a health check. I'm worried.

Orwell loved English working-class culture, literature, and humour - but not Britain’s ruling class, nor its empire. He saw English patriotism as a way of glossing over empire, inequality and decline.

Orwell was literally a peniless immigrant in France. It's all there in "Down and Out in Paris and London". It taught him empathy for the poor, who he wrote about as human beings. This is the antidote to the xenophobia that was being pedalled in London today.

In "Keep the Aspidistra Flying", Orwell shows how obsession with money poisons relationships and drives people to cruelty. Wealth, or the pursuit of it, produces hierarchy, contempt and shallow values. Elon should probably read this one.

Orwell said extreme wealth is dehumanising both for those who have it (isolating them, breeding cruelty, corrupting moral vision) and for those forced to serve it. Socialism is needed not only to lift up the poor, but to liberate the wealthy from the moral prison of their own riches.

In 1941, Orwell warned that Britain could not be both democratic and have extreme inequality - war and fascism would exploit those contradictions. Still true in 2025.

Orwell hated the theatre of moral absolutes that let people excuse cruelty as duty. “They are only doing their duty” was his warning about bureaucratised violence of the kind being carried about by ICE in the USA and often cheered on by Musk.

Orwell went to Spain because he was an internationalist. He believed fascism was a danger to all humanity and that solidarity must cross borders. No "Britain first" for him. He sought to expose propaganda and lies wherever they came from, whether from fascists or Stalinists.

When Musk invokes Orwell at a far-right march, it’s more than ironic; it’s Orwellian: twisting language and truth so that oppression sounds like freedom and hate sounds like duty. To give Musk credit, he must know this.

Yeah. Agree. Public money would be far better utilised by scrapping failing benefit systems & implementing Universal Basic Income instead. #UBI

Yeah, there are all kinds of reasons not to claim social security in the UK. The systems are incredibly human-hostile on many levels.

Many people don't claim benefits, prefer autonomy/independence; + benefits claimed can be clawed back by DWP with no warning, for flimsiest of reasons. Payments stop. No notice, demands for repayment & imposition of Citizens Fines (set at roughly 20% of debt) People catapulted into worry & debt.

Estimated 7m households not claiming benefits they are entitled to. Missing out on support makes the cost of living crisis even harder to cope with. Deven is right: low awareness, high complexity and stigma all part of the explanation. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

High complexity, for sure. Applying online for anything is difficult for many people, especially disabled, neurodivergent, English-as-2nd language & less tech-savvy people. I’m in 2 of those categories. Luckily Mr M is highly tech savvy & helps me & volunteers at library to help others.

A lot of people don't claim benefits when they're just about getting by, even though they probably should. Then the government and media freak out when more people start claiming, once external factors mean that more aren't getting by.

@torstenbell.bsky.social I’m sure you are doing your best but Labour needs to tool up and begin fighting back. Attack Reform on their unpopular policies - on the NHS, climate, fox hunting etc. And the government must get off X - it’s the modern Der Sturmer. Once they go the media will follow.

One day, nearly 2000 years ago, a cat dashed across some drying tiles, somewhere near Hadrian's Wall. It's immortality of a kind, isn't it?

Photo of square orange tiles, set into the ground, across one of which several cats footprints are clearly visible.

Revolving doors. Thames Water paid £1m+ to corporate lobbyists part-owned by Starmer adviser. The aim is to reach policymakers, keep TW private. TW pays £200m a year to various advisers, cost borne by customers. Public ownership would end this chicanery. No need to pay dividends, lobbyists.
