International students are struggling to obtain visas or declining acceptance due to fears stoked both by the govt’s ideological deportation policy & by the seemingly arbitrary detention of students. The long-term impacts of these trends on the vitality of US higher education cannot be understated.

For academic programming cuts, there should always be early, careful, & meaningful faculty involvement. It is primarily the responsibility of the faculty—who have the subject matter expertise & front-line experience— to determine if/where programs reductions should be made. 4/

The claim of financial necessity is weak. Major cuts are appropriate ONLY when a severe financial crisis fundamentally compromises an institution’s academic integrity & cannot be alleviated by less drastic means. An institution’s desire to shift priorities is not the same as a fiscal crisis. 2/
