I gave up cable over 2 decades ago so I kind of go back and forth on this. People can choose what media to consume, or not. But our media landscape today is also very fractured compared to the golden age of the big 3. I think this environment encourages krankism because it draws dedicated audiences.

I mean, I don’t find pluralism all that great, I believe there is ultimately one reality. But it’s not like I have a problem with people using that method. I think a lot of ‘centrists’ are also just people who aren’t really sure, and go with what ‘seems legit’ at the time.

I’m quite sure that for Silver, progressivism rates lower among the general population because of the widely held assumption today that it is simply a placeholder for leftism. Blatant leftists get more of a pass bc ‘at least they’re honest about it.’ Many see ‘progressive’ as a Trojan horse now.

Progressivism and leftism aren’t the same. Progressivism was formed out of direct action towards specific goals, like the standard of a 40 hour work week. Progressivism is not an ideology but a position. Leftism is an ideology whose goal is to replace every institution with prefabricated structures.

The end times prophecies of ‘the left’ look a lot more like medieval and evangelical conceptions of the end times than the general symbolism that’s actually written. Even including the demands that all Jews must repent of their ways and answer for the sins of Israel and/or convert.

$600 TVs are seen from the other side of the fence as offering folks more of their income to plan their own lives, and retirement, if that’s what they wish. A more robust social security plan that would fully cover retirement is not mutually exclusive to the possibility of cheap electronics.

As I’ve said elsewhere, capitalism is a dead word. It’s beyond salvation for usefulness as a word for general communication beyond those who already share the views of the speaker. There are at least two widespread definitions in use, and if you really want to get technical, probably 10-20.

Imperialism has a definition, it doesn’t mean ‘generally bad,’ just like genocide isn’t a general designation for a disproportionate response. If it is demonstrably true that US policy is complicit in conditions in Haiti, that should be dealt with on its own terms. Not by leveraging hyperbole.

America is the richest and most powerful country to ever exist. Our currency is the world standard. Our economy is the rock the world depends on. Contrary to much popular opinion, we hold this enviable position while not being an empire (we do not have literal colonies the federal government uses to extract wealth and resources). There is no danger to the US that we need to ‘restore’ some lost glory. These are the glory days.

What people really need to understand is how ridiculous all of this is. Germany can fit inside Texas alone. There are still 49 other states. Trump can’t occupy the whole country, and sending national guard out of state leaves those states undefended.

I mean, the most likely explanation for lowering the requirements to join ICE and the FBI is that they aren’t getting applicants.

East and west are arbitrary, there is no metaphysical basis for Japan being the far east. We just agree on these things so that people are able to communicate. Placing socialism to ‘the left’ of liberalism is an attempt to fabricate a metaphysical argument where there is no metaphysical designation.

Are we ever going to get any retractions from folks claiming AI could turn almost anyone into the equivalent of an expert? ‘The future belongs to those who ask the right questions.’ You need to be an expert, or something of one, to ask the right questions.

Explicitly defends is doing a lot of work here. Bringing kids to your military command centers and operations is way outside any norm.

A true socialist state requires immense authoritarianism to establish and immense authoritarianism to maintain.

Placing socialism and communism to the left of liberalism is really the root of all The Stupid today. This contention, that a state with unilateral power over society and the economy constitutes ’more liberalism’ is complete nonsense.

67% of Democrats and 62% of people under 30 think socialism just means food stamps. The majority of the DSA do not hold this illusion, and according to this article, most chapters outside of NYC do not even endorse democracy (which is part of the name for the organization).
