In my personal experience they believe they can't make a difference. Between the rich using wealth to manipulate opinions to their favour (ads & magazine/newspaper owners) to government overwhelmingly prioritising their needs over anyone else they're believe democracy cannot ever work.

I would have similar issues if "presenting my ID" at a shop entailed putting it in a tube and sending it "somewhere" and just hoping no one else got their hands on it. But that's not how it works in physical stores, I show it to a single person who frankly couldn't care less.
