Because i encountered it again i wanted restate my opinion on Itch Did they screwed up? In many ways Are they fucking up in purpose to screw creators? No of course not. Is this good to boycott Itch? You won't get anything good back. You will just get not Itch anymore, and nothing to replace it
Like, I cannot state how much Itch is an anomaly in the current Internet landscape. Do you know most hosting companies for personal website ALSO ban adult content? Do you know how expensive it is to actually run services like this? Like, we took for granted Itch for so long.

"Giving in to the law" is such a crazy sentiment to hold. Like oh please website ran by two people I know we've been yelling at you nonstop for the last month but can you break the law on purpose and get the entire site banned in the UK pweaaase
the whole thing amazes me, especially how uncritically people will believe these arguments that (if you actually educated yourself) are not good arguments. it’s such a distraction from the actual *big real problem* that needs our combined energy to successfully fight… instead itch is the target.

this same thing is affecting deviantart on a large scale too. you can google that. with some artists of even sfw content saying they are blocked. for example example this is a very important reality check: www.blocked.org.uk/reported-sit... blaming itch is misinformed, especially in this context.
they inform you. it’s not a conspiracy against anyone. they are not responsible for UK censorship laws. this was in the news, and all platforms are required to do this now. blaming itch for that is the ignorant thing to do, especially since they have no say in UK politics.
people getting upset at itch.io for “giving into UK censorship laws by hiding developer pages from UK visitors”… very much don’t know how a website works. these laws affect all websites & platforms. fwiw itch tells you if your page is hidden or not (and what you can do) in the geo restrictions tab.

what i do love, just as much as the project itself, is the reaction from people to it. i think it’s super interesting, how it seems to touch on this unarticulated nostalgia in people’s relationship to sharing things on the internet… looking back at a more innocent and now idealized life online.

yay thank you!! i finished the movement (floating) the other day and it honestly feels like dancing through the air. you can get kinda good at it and defy gravity for a while but inevitably you do sink back to the ground. i think it’s going to be wonderful!

…like absolutely nightmare behavior these last weeks. i got put on a blocklist called “itch apologists” because i was addressing some of the misinformation and said they deserve a chance. i watched them and their staff get death threats. i got threats for standing up for them… all for what?
i’m just going to boost this again instead of 🤦 at how ignorant people are. any website that hosts your games FOR FREE, that doesn’t sell your data, or force exorbitant amounts off ads, is a public service & operates at a loss. you are hurting the wrong people by setting revenue to them to 0.

That is the part that bothers me the most. It takes so much effort just to get people to use itch alone. Everyone that jumped ship in a panic because of the ongoing misinformation campaign are now complaining that people won't use whatever Itch alternative they post their stuff into.
People really don't understand how much of a one sided positive deal Itch was for them and everyone trying to reinvent the wheel will find out that even at a fraction of what Itch is, they won't be able to sustain it in any realistic way without suffering of similar consequeces.
it did disappear, was up for a while (have a screenshot too), got a good amount of blocks over this all. very frustrating overall that this had to turn into heavily moralized “sides”.
Also, ye godes let us not pin everything outside of the big company platforms on the back of one person trying their hardest. I'm not sure if my sympathy or horror runs deeper.
I do think Itch handled it suboptimally from what little came out. That said, I also think it's worth keeping that I have no reason to believe that Leafo can't or won't do better if he's given time, feedback, and the resources to have more preparation and options. I think boycotting is a mistake.
(and no don’t hit me with that “well actually me/my friend/others are making an alternative to itch!” bs. first, i’m happy for you, but it will be hard & take forever to get that to the same level of adoption + legitimacy as itch is now. when it does you will have the same problems. be realistic!!)

because as soon as an actual alternative that does none of these things that every other mainstream website does in the dark…as soon as it falls victim to this awful big thing (like payment processors coming down on it) where if it doesn’t comply it will be crushed… we turn on it like it should die.
we don’t deserve alternatives like itch. we deserve predatory platforms that sell our data to advertisers or use us in training data behind our backs. we deserve algorithms, exploitation that takes advantage of us existing on a platform…all the worst that we’re used to & don’t bat an eye at…why not?
seeing how absolutely gleefully willing people where to turn on itch like it should just die (and still want it dead), based entirely on misinformation or lies, even after everything that site has done… has got me really questioning why at all create to empower others. we turn on our own so fast…
