Speaking as someone in a family with two children diagnosed with it, and an older generation convinced it is the same as being very, very ‘handicapped’ (as opposed to just a different way of approaching the world,) you will get absolutely no argument in that from li’l ol’ ADHMe. 😊
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
For the same reasons they won’t engage with the positive arguments for immigration. Cowardice, and a poverty of both morality and intelligence. (And let’s not forget convenience.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
*secretly proud*
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there wouldn’t be significant stuff in there. It’s just in a post-truth world, ‘alternative facts’ are always bent out of shape to suit the powerful’s agenda. See, in the last 24 hrs alone paracetemol causes autism or Sadiq Khan has any say on immigration.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I came to it *very* late (mid noughties) and I haven’t watched it again since cos I’m scared it won’t be quite as brilliant as I remember. (Except the clubbing episode. Every time I need cheering up I just put it on YouTube.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I do wonder if the Epstein files (which may be released now a new Dem is in office,) aren’t going to prove the most ridiculous damp squib. Of course, everyone will say it proves THEM right, but I think the obvious truth is Epstein wasn’t an actual pimp, just a dirty old man. With money. And friends.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com I do hope your rotator cuff is feeling better. Not to indulge in competitive ageing or anything, but having just woken up with a very sore neck from *sleeping*, I just managed to pull something in my right shoulder OPENING A DOOR. (Presently googling Dignitas.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
And let us not forget the IMMINENT DANGER OF FORRIN ILLEGALS GROOMING OUR BEAUTIFUL ENGLISH ROSES (despite the fact that on another day we’d be calling them something *rather* different,) whilst at the same time, inviting a convicted sex offender over for a State Visit. Truly. I f***ing despair.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
(But joking apart, every SINGLE metric proves properly controlled immigration is a force for good, both economically and societally. The fact that making the case for that seems beyond the wit of any politician - except possibly @zackpolanski.bsky.social - drives me f**king insane.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
The main reason I want it is to see the look on their faces tbh.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Politics is pragmatism. That doesn’t mean it has to be without principles. Like most right-thinking people, I’m pretty disgusted with the whole shooting match these days, but we are where we are. If you’re determined to read my initial post utterly literally, be my guest. It wasn’t meant that way.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I left last week. I’m not going to vote for party that uses the phrase ‘island of strangers’ & refuses to confront Brexit. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Starmer was quietly ok with a coalition (at least for Brexit) so he could change position, ironically rather like Clegg on tuition fees.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Haha. I spoke at a rally with him last week. Didn’t get the chance to talk to him, but he does at least seem to have some discernible principles he appears to want to stick to. (Easier to do from outside.) He’s much closer to getting my vote than Starmer at the moment. I’d take a coalition in a 📸.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Hence my caveat. I’m simply saying he seems the least insane/despicable/defeated. Perhaps, as simpletons are allowed the vote, and given where Reform are in the polls right now & where we are post-Brexit, actually reaching out to simpletons in terms they understand is not *such* a terrible idea.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
No, hence my use of the term ‘tedious phrase’. It’s just shorthand for saying he’s the only one who doesn’t seem mad, bad or deeply disappointing.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
They’re also both demonstrably idiots, even if Farage is a sly, conniving and tactically astute one (not something you can say of Badenoch.) And a drink with Starmer would be awful. Just a long, deeply disappointed gaze into my beer, then up at him, then back to my beer. 🍺😔
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Now I’m really confused. Patrick or Ed?
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
What? My dad’s reaction?
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Yup.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Without wishing to parrot a tedious phrase, he’s surely the only party leader most of us would have a pint with now. (But then my mother says my father starts shouting at the telly every time he appears, so maybe he induces stronger reactions than I realise.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
It was very striking to hear what Wilson, Heath and even The Times said. Anyone saying that now would be dismissed as a hysterical wokeist. Which doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be said. Very loudly. Starmer’s ‘Island of Strangers’ comment is just one of the reasons I left the Labour Party last week.

Really VERY good, isn't it? And terrifying - the way the playbook never f*cking changes, yet the same insidious bastards still get the same stupid bastards to fall for it. Depressing as hell. (But pleasing @iandunt.bsky.social ends with a little hopeful note that general attitudes have improved.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
This was a little extra on a podcast I did recently. Still reeling from my own stupidity that when asked for my favourite motorway service station, I didn't say - 'Tebay, or not Tebay. That is the question.'
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
(But thank you for reminding me. I was listening to it again in the car last night on the way back from a gig, and my favourite Steinbeck quote popped into my head. It used it in my first ever solo show in 2002. I THINK I NEED TO BRING IT BACK!)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I am saying this to EVERYBODY, but @originstorypodcast.bsky.social on Powell & 'Rivers of Blood' shouldn't just be on the national curriculum, it should be required listening for all. Esp ANYONE commenting on Reform/Kirk/Yaxley-Lennon. Cannot believe we're wading through this much ignorance again.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
Me, after a ridiculously restless night of tossing & turning: Hey! I think I might just have got the hang of this sleeping lar… *ALARM GOES OFF* 😡🥱
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I…what? He’s banning paracetemol for causing AUTISM? 🤯 Let alone the fact he can’t pronounce acetaminophen. He clearly can’t even *comprehend* autism. Anyone with autism in their family is already very bored of fighting. But we’re really at war now.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Sorry. I must be ignorant. (At least I admit it, eh Donald?) You can’t get paracetamol in the US???
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Oh FUCK. I thought it was paper recycling tomorrow and rapture next week. I’ll just have to listen out for the angelic host first thing.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I have done a lot of these over the years, and there’s been an angry fruitcake in every single one. Not today, funnily enough. Which can only lead me to one obvious, and somewhat uncomfortable conclusion…
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Actually, scrub that. I just read it rather than listened to him garble it. If you can’t read acetaminophen, you shouldn’t be President. The End.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
I’d say his endorsement of pure quackery is a much bigger deal than his inability to pronounce a word most of us would struggle with. He seems almost human, whilst doing an utterly inhumane thing. Which is, if anything, worse.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
No, I agree. Your argument is sound, I’m just a secret conservative snob at heart who has always loved Auntie and would rather wallow in her previous glories than acknowledge her undoubted decline.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
That’s a great idea on many levels. But unfortunately does leave the field wide open to nothing but propaganda. Call me a bluff old traditionalist, but I wouldn’t mind a return to an independent editorial policy entirely interested in facts and not paid for, or under threat from the corporate world.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Again, recommend @originstorypodcast.bsky.social on Enoch Powell. The biggest mistake the UK govt made was forgetting to put ‘OBVIOUSLY we only mean WHITE people FFS’ on legislation offering citizenship to those from former colonies. You couldn’t say that then, apparently. Now, on the other hand…
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Exactly. As the course leader said, make the technology work for you.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Should have given him a Guinness. Then they’d have just waved you straight through. Actually, scrub that. Iron Bru. 🧡
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
Did a Speed Awareness Course today and like to think I have developed a far more mature attitude to road safety as a result. You simply can’t be too careful.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
Bloody Steve here, with his bloody facts. Again. Trying to point out how they will make bloody Britain bloody crappier again just because they're bloody true. Honestly mate, why do you hate sovereignty so much? Don't you know it's a perfect concept which can never be sullied by bloody reality?
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Well we got there in the end. Good to have you on board. 😜
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Very worth listening to @originstorypodcast.bsky.social ‘s latest on Powell & ‘Rivers of Blood’. Much of the horror & outcry was genuine. Sadly, so was a lot of the public support. What’s horrific is that the language Powell used which many were outraged by THEN is becoming common currency NOW.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Yes. I remember that with horror. As does Bonnie Greer. Thing is, so should Griffin. He was awful, out of his depth & somewhat pathetic. A bit like Piers Morgan on HIGNFY. Problem is Farage isn’t awful. (I mean, he’s far worse, but he’s a far better media performer. God knows he’s had the practice.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
F*ck me. Don’t see much about the govt ‘striving’ in the polls, Kemi Badenoch ‘striving’ to be anything other than utterly useless or Reform ‘striving’ to not be mendacious rabble/rousing populist bastards who wouldn’t recognise a coherent policy if it hung itself halfway up a flagpole.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Probably best to think of it as a particularly bizarre equation that starts as 52/48, but which observers refuse to believe almost immediately starts reversing polarities. I think Heisenberg called it ‘The Certainty Principle’
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Speaking from experience, much of the present malaise stems from Brexit, when they were forced to ‘both sides’ every issue, despite the fact one side was mostly trying to present boring reality & the other was largely lying through its teeth. It left the whole edifice fundamentally unbalanced.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Oh, plenty of people will say it. It’s just the failure to report it as anything other than ‘controversial’ or even worse ‘a divisive figure’ that is so insidious. The Beeb lost the plot around Brexit, with the forces of the Right cowing it into ‘balance’. Ironically meaning it is now anything but.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I think it started LONG before him. Not a fan of the later series, but there’s a great bit in The Crown when Marmaduke Hussey is just utterly befuddled at his inability to get ‘his’ journalists to stop interviewing Diana or shut up about Charles’s tampon fantasies. ‘SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!’ Etc.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Isiah?
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I dunno. I mean, I don’t really see any problem *starting* with the obvious villain. Of course the problems run so much deeper. I suspect a great deal of them are around govt 🔄 media access. What should independent on either side is anything but. Bravery is required. Like leaving X for a start.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Reposted. 👏👏👏. If I could do so repeatedly on a permanent basis I would, at least until one Gibb, R is handed his P45. I do think Labour comms have been dreadful in govt. But the failure to confront the media itself is becoming existential. Leveson 2 & reforming the Beeb should have been Day 1.
David Lewis (@davidclewis.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
I’m still in favour of the BBC as a public broadcaster and the licence fee as a payment model. I think a majority feel the same. But the management has spent so long in the thrall/scared shitless of the political right that the news department is now somewhere between useless and actively dangerous.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
(Ridiculous post anyway. Gays would never wear polycotton.)
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Got some *really* bad news for the gays in polycotton at the oyster bar. This reminds me, I need to find a comprehensive list of all the madness in the Bible for comedy purposes. (It’s 09:22 on a Monday morning & I wonder why I never get anything done.) There probably a hell for procrastination too.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
To the extent that I’m not certain they’re losing the plot, but rather being dragged away from it at a managerial/editorial level we are unaware of. I’ve always retained faith in the BBC. Especially when you look at the ‘defund’ mob. But that is being SORELY tested right now.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I’m coming to realise more and more how much is in the public domain but just how much the public have to be dragged towards it kicking and screaming before they can consider themselves remotely ‘informed’. Goebbels is presently wanking himself silly in whichever circle of hell he presently dwells.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I couldn’t agree more. Mason’s fawning cover of Reform is another huge problem. Not sure what’s going on. I love the Beeb, sometimes work for them & believe their funding model is VITAL to retaining editorial independence. Which they just seem to have given up on recently. This doesn’t end well.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com)
Personally I think it’s great Charlie Kirk brought all these kids closer to Jesus. Apart from the gay ones, obviously. They need to be stoned to death. Never ceases to amaze me how these lunatics claim to believe in an all powerful god, but insist they retain the right to point out his mistakes.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I have defended the BBC to the hilt up until now, but their coverage of the Kirk assassination has been both bizarre and not a little disturbing. Their willingness to go along with the ‘radical leftist’ narrative around his assassin in clear contravention of the developing evidence was appalling.

I think the fact this goes unchallenged (as far as I can see) reflects pretty poorly on Newsnight in general and Matt in particular.

Happy to disagree on how much we care. That’s a personal choice, but right now, I believe a fundamentally important one. However, very glad someone else has thrown the words ‘Horst Wessel’ into the mix because that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking since the moment Kirk was murdered.

I would ‘Like’ this, but in good conscience, I can’t.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
The irony is this whole issue revolves around an illegal broadcasting/licensing deal in the States the network need the governments help to make legal. As always, it comes down to money. What makes the BBC unique is it is publicly funded. They are presently writing their own suicide note.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Exactly. I don’t disagree for a moment. My point is, all these other ‘talking points’ - ‘untruths’, ‘comedian’ etc are simply a distraction tactic to shift focus from the very point you are making. If you don’t think banning Kimmel is textbook authoritarianism in action, you are the one lying.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
The fact that claiming a young white Mormon kid with MAGA loving parents who was incredibly handy with a rifle may have some affiliation to MAGA can be brandished as ‘an untruth’ tells us everything we need to know in general, and about the ‘opinions’ of this woman in particular.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
I care. Because his horrific murder has emboldened fascists in America and by extension all across the world to use it as a power grab. If you don’t think we are very close to 1930s Germany here, you haven’t read enough history. Time to pick a side. Now.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Claiming anyone who ever said anything funny qualifies as a comedian is patently fucking ridiculous. And the fact that’s her starting point rather than addressing the somewhat more pertinent fact a man was removed from the airwaves for a comment Trump didn’t like tells you all you need to know.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
But surely that is also the point. If ‘plenty is contestable’ then you can’t accuse Kimmel of lying. The other thing that really gets my goat is the other woman saying ‘Are YOU a comedian?’ to @mattchorley.bsky.social No he isn’t. He’s a journalist. That’s why he’s presenting Newsnight.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Don’t just ‘Like’ it @sturdyalex.bsky.social! It’s an honest question! What is the ‘untruth’ Kimmel spoke? I really want to know what fucking universe whoever that woman is lives in.
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
What is she saying he said that was an ‘untruth’?
Alistair Barrie (@alistairbarrie.com) reply parent
Wow. He needs to run in ‘28. I’m not saying he’s qualified. He probably wouldn’t say he’s qualified. But given the amount of Democrats who just voted for ‘Charlie Kirk Day’ I’d say there isn’t really another option.
