Also thank you for being open for talking about this stuff! You seem genuine in a conversation about it. Pinterest is so bad it's forced me to go back to the libraries. But honestly? It's got me reading again. When a door closes, sometimes a new one opens for the better.
One concept artist I really like- Trevor Claxton. His stuff is so refreshing and well-informed. I took his class and he talked about how his art is based around a lot of the power tools he used when he was a plumber/fix it guy before he went into art. Stuff like that is soooo cool to me!
My house is a library of reference books. My phone filled to the brim of photos of signs, buildings, even lighting at certain time of day I really liked. My notepad a compilation of thoughts or dialogue I might not even use but it's there. I don't use pinterest as much but I soak in life and books.
I love that art is an outward mirror of my passions. Research being just as much apart of the process as drawing is so fun! It even gets me more excited about art because I get to practice what I've learned. I'm a scholar first and foremost. Art is just my execution of theories and ideas.
Honestly half of the fun of art is the research itself and finding ways to incorporate real things filtered through my voice. A lot of my influence comes from graphic design that people wouldn't even guess. I do a lot of library researching on the weekends now and it's been great! It's very fun!

Stain is me trying to figure out how to blend high sci-fi with high fantasy with some modern touches. Main characters are two bratty mage apprentices trying to get their magic licenses back by doing magic community service. It's been a fun project to write/worldbuild for so far.

If you read the second part I mean cartoons aimed at kids. I work in animation, I can tell you it’s boiled down to very sweet narratives and bright outcomes. They are comforting stories. It’s not bad to have a sweet tooth for narrative but it’s good to have variety in your diet as a writer.
One teaches comfort and the other teaches complexity. Both do feed the soul just different cravings. If you’re striving be a writer I think it’s good to eat a variety of flavors.You can still add sugar to lemon and come out with something more interesting than just sugar.
Have you never felt slightly bitter after an interaction with another human? Have you never felt soured that a conflict didn’t end the way you wanted it too? Being an adult has its mix of triumph and tragedy. Whereas when we’re a kid and watching children media we’re only fed bright outcomes.
Strawberries? Tart. Cooking chocolate? Bitter. Lemon? Sour. But those flavors paired with sugar elevates BOTH the ingredients to make such a much more complex and savory dish. Contrast is the spice of life.
Because you’re catering to a younger/general audience you tend to tilt towards sweeter narrative that almost forgets that you can’t just…have a dessert just be only sugar. It needs something bitter or spicy, just something MORE than just sugar cake. You lose complexity and end up w/ something bland.
The new Magma ( magma.com ) brush engine is really nice, the pressure to your lines is getting the brush tool feeling really good.
Gonna QRT this one, if you noticed a big shift in style it's because working on Avatar as a character layout artist in the animation department fundamentally shifted my style a lot. But in a lot of good ways! I do like when shows I work on change me as an artist and become apart of me.

Reminds me of year 1 Arknights designs where it was banger after banger. Then we veered in....some kind of general gacha territory at times but its a good return to old form. Their more grounded but some quirky stuff is what I feel is the soul of their design. Also why I really like Arknights.
Oh yeah I "read" which is via audiobook lol. I got library cards from multiple cities in two states so I am making good use of em on Libby.
Also alllmoostt done with Earthsea: The Farthest Shore. I've really enjoying Earthsea so far! It's such a good book on humility.
