Armies should give out medals if the guy on the other side gets a medal. Sample citation "Private Fritz was doing a perfectly adequate soldiering job, manning an MG, when one Corporal Jones just decided to pull some hero shit and rolled up his position. Adequately done Fritz"

So using hydrogen/helium accepts some weight for the benefit of keeping the skin very thin.
Andrea Matranga (@andreamatranga.bsky.social) reply parent
The ideal airship would be a vacuum ship, full of empty, and the skin just holding the volume apart. But to keep a vacuum flask from collapsing the outside wall would have to be so thick the airship would be heavier than air.

There's this theory that says that dirigibles get more cost effective with scale (because skin squares with the square and payload with the cube), this was my idea for moving them around

If each atom on Earth was a deck of card, and each was shuffled once per second, you would only expect to get them in new deck order (or any specific desired order) once every 26 billion years. But you would expect to get SOME order twice (birthday problem) in one quadrillionth of a second.

My niece can scrunch up her mouth and block her nostrils with the top of her upper lip. She learned how to do this naturally when swimming and thought everybody could do it and did it. The other day in swim class a friend asked her why she always puckers her mouth underwater and found out.

I have a theory that wolf calls are designed to allow robust, accurate ranging. firts wolf howls a descending rote (standard wolf call sound), second wolf matches pitch he hears. first wolf compares his emitted pitch to the one he hears to estimate distance to second wolf

Obviously, there is scope to screw up the implementation, but I like the principle. Basically, it's an extended admission test (they call it a filter semester) but one that is more conformal to what you actually have to do to get a medicine degree.
Andrea Matranga (@andreamatranga.bsky.social) reply parent
If you passed all three but didn't score high enough to continue with Medicine, you can take your pick of going for a biology, pharmacy, or healthcare professions (nursing, rehabilitation, etc).
Andrea Matranga (@andreamatranga.bsky.social) reply parent
They get two attempts at each of the three exams. If they pass them, their scores are added, and the top scorers can continue with the second semester of medicine as usual.
Andrea Matranga (@andreamatranga.bsky.social)
Italy is doing something interesting with it's admission to medical school. Anybody with a high school diploma can enrol for the first semester (actually two months of intensive all day coursework). They take three course: Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Mostly taught remotely.

I wonder if Italy's success in the industrial machinery is due to the fact that it's a sector with vendor lock in, and Italy has a lot of family run firms that care about maintaining relationships in the long run to pass them to the next generation, and a cultural mistrusts of "excessive" profit.
