Has nothing to do with climate change. It’s due to the topography of Texas. This is in Texas Hill Country. Warm moist air comes off the Gulf, cools rapidly against the hills and flash flooding can happen. Texas leads the nation in flooding for this reason.

What’s your favorite field of scientific inquiry?

It’s worth reviewing David Hume’s “Is/Ought Problem”. Science discovers the empirical. What is. Religion and philosophy is for deciding on what should be. It is inherently not empirical. What should be can not be determined empirically, and what’s empirical cannot be determined by what should be.

If you’re a scientist, can you tell me what field you work in and a random interesting or surprising scientific fact that blew your mind or shocked you when you first got into the field?

Who repairs power lines during a blizzard I think should count.

The 14th Amendment’s purpose was to overrule the Dred Scot decision.

It does. Vitamin C, D and zinc are all beneficial.

Is there a way to see how many views a post has on Blue Sky?

Agreed. Our economy should be focused on getting people on the bottom rung of the ladder to move up rather than finding ways for the extremely wealthy to become even more wealthy.

We grossly under estimate the intelligence of animals.

I don’t care who disagrees with this, but I just want to say I freaking LOVE squirrels!

Podcasts are popular for this reason. The TV formula of 30 second sound bites between commercials was always horrible and I’m glad it’s going the way of the dinosaur.

That’s awesome! I’ve often seen people struggle with precision and clean lines with water colors. It’s amazing what you’ve done here.

The video is quite adorable. Rats don’t have the best eyesight, but they seemed happy driving these little cars rather haphazardly.

This isn’t true. The closest star is Proxima Centauri and it’s 4.25 light years away. Any star that could disrupt our solar system would disrupt one of the gas giants like Neptune first due to the lower angular momentum.

Political extremism, regardless of which side it’s on, often results in violence. The more extremism, the more violence.

I get the impression the guy just had a personal grudge not related to politics.

The frog thing is the most hilarious. Amphibians regularly switch sexes. It’s completely natural.

I have a pretty large pilated woodpecker in my backyard. It’s call reminds me a lot of a chicken, so I’ve just started calling it my backyard chicken.

The flag comes from John Locke. It means we have a natural right to democracy instead of being ruled over by a king. It was flown in Boston during the American Revolution.

A lot of people don’t realize the “appeal to heaven” phrase came from John Locke, an Enlightenment philosopher and it was used as an argument against the Divine Right of Kings. The flag means we have a right to democracy.
