100% agree, and also I find it ridiculously cool that the entirety of Animal Well is like 40MB. Gamedev is so many things and that rocks.

and new @thriceofficial.bsky.social which sounds like it's right out of the same era and even reminds me a little of some of the aforementioned bands!

This is a wonderful essay, thank you for writing it. I'd like to hope that if I ever found myself in that position of responsibility I would have treated it with the appropriate respect, but I'll be particularly mindful of how best to prepare for such situations now!

I guess this just means I'm gonna need to play faster and better than you to not get spoilered! Oh no.

A business partner recently messaged me, “You're the weirdest of the modern day businessmen and it's why we like you." It's amazing how the right people find you when you do what you want, how you want. In this case, it’s not running ads, having tracking pixels, etc. Trust your gut and be weird!

I'm in the unenviable position of being a leftie nerd who didn't like TLJ, which basically means that when it comes to Star Wars opinions I have zero friends 😅 So 100% agree, this is why we all need to agree rise of skywalker bad!
M. Kaspar (@archomath.net) reply parent
Surely if we can agree on nothing else in this fractured society, we can find common ground on Rise of Skywalker being irredeemable

+1 to "falling blocks" or similar, something that can be interpreted thematically rather than being more mechanically prescriptive like "arcade puzzler". I guess "block clearing" also works now that I think about it—that might even be too broad. Guess it depends what types of games you want to see!

My top picks in the Aussie metal scene, in order of increasing "heaviness", with a suggested album or two to start from: - Thornhill (The Dark Pool) - Polaris (The Mortal Coil/The Death of Me) - Make Them Suffer (Make Them Suffer/Old Souls) If you're at all into metalcore, this is where I'd start.
M. Kaspar (@archomath.net) reply parent
Mix in more electro/rap/groove... - Northlane (Alien/Mesmer) - Ocean Grove (ODDWORLD/Flip Phone Fantasy) Can also check out In Hearts Wake and Diamond Construct. And our biggest exports: - Parkway Drive (Ire/Deep Blue)* - The Amity Affliction (Let the Ocean Take Me/Youngbloods) Happy hunting!
M. Kaspar (@archomath.net) reply parent
Looking to ramp up the intensity/aggression? - Thy Art Is Murder (Hate/Dear Desolation) - Alpha Wolf (Quiet Place to Die/Half Living Things) - Gravemind (Conduit) Not that much... - Void of Vision (CHRONICLES/What I'll Leave Behind) - Deadlights (The Uncanny Valley) - Reliqa (Secrets of the Future)

oh no, the impossible question! haha It depends on what type of heavy you're into. I'm biased towards metalcore, where I think we lead the world. I'll do my best to try and lay out a bit of a map to follow. I'm sure anyone who comes across this post later will loudly disagree :)
M. Kaspar (@archomath.net)
Have loved listening to #AusHottest100 and being performatively outraged at people's taste, and I'm well aware it's outside the mainstream, but I am genuinely a bit shocked and saddened there wasn't even a single metal-adjacent song in the mix. Australia has such an incredible heavy scene people!!

The reason reading and writing end up being so important is that they are our window into perspectives and experiences that are not ours and being able to truly wrap your mind around that is an exercise in building shared humanity.

Counterpoint, I got a Leap because I didn't want to be that guy who has an Aeron.. ended up disliking it and caving and buying the Aeron anyway, which has been really really great. My fiancee prefers the Leap though! I think the moral here is try get to a store where you can test them out.
