I don't remember any others off the top of my head
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
I know what a house venue is, I'm old but not that old. I was just citing what they wrote in quote marks. The diaries are very inconsistent/rambling/mistake-prone.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't remember there being any preoccupation with trans kids in particular
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
On the music venue: @kylebazgo.bsky.social found it -- it is indeed someone's house where they hold concerts, and is presented as a trans/furry/queer space. (They intentionally withhold the address from being public)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not a disclosure issue. There just isn't as much out there. Crooks used a VPN, was careful, etc. The MN shooter literally posted a 250+ page hand-written diary in a 20-minute YouTube video. The two couldn't be any different with how they operated.

1) The Minnesota shooter filmed 250+ pages of their diary and posted it online. Crooks did not. 2) We do know a decent amount about Crooks: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/08/u...

When I taught first year Russian, some of my students did this to practice Cyrillic. Not that weird, and kinda fun when you're first starting to learn Russian

New video piece on the Israeli double-tap strike on Nasser Hospital that killed six journalists. From @ckoettl.bsky.social, @sanjanamv.bsky.social, and Natalie Reneau www.nytimes.com/video/world/...
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably none
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah it's hard to search because the band and actual dog parks ruin the search. Most likely it's a big house where a lot of local bands play. Elsewhere in the journal the shooter talks about going to a concert with lots of trans/queer people present, so it could be the same place.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
The politics/ideology are all over the place -- it definitely deserves a fuller treatment. The shooter talks about wanting to shoot up hate groups like Nazis to make the world a better place, while simultaneously talking about hating Jews/Mexicans/black people. Nothing is consistent.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Direction quotation from what they said, though I probably should have put armed in quotes too. Full sentence here: "But this might be a 'so radically left they went right' kinda place and there might be armed trans girls."
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
You're giving it more thought that the shooter did
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
I put it in quotes because it's a direct quotation, here's the full sentence: "But this might be a 'so radically left they went right' kinda place and there might be armed trans girls"
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
They were vague about the venue itself, and the descriptions gave the impression that it is not like an official, established business/concert hall/bar. (A "house venue", so I assume like a big house where they have shows with lots of people)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent

(An outlet translated "Бэионэта" as "Beyonce". Maybe they don't play enough video games to know the reference.)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Here's what it looks like in Pinpoint with OCR-ed text. You have to read a *lot* of the diary to pick up how vowels in particular are transliterated. For example, highlighted word below is "continuing" I've seen a major outlet mis-"translate" a key word or two in their coverage.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
I screenshotted every page (this only took like 10-15 minutes with SnagIt), uploaded them to Pinpoint, and it did a good job of OCR-ing the handwritten faux-Russian. I could then do keyword searches in Russian (predicting how it was written) to make sure I didn't miss big topics.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
On a more boring, technical note, as I like to describe research/reporting methodologies whenever I do a story: I read a big chunk of the diaries just old-school style of taking notes while watching the video with the pages being flipped through. Eventually, I used Google Pinpoint.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Aha, hadn't seen this before, thanks! "At the father's home, police recovered a tactical vest, two external media storage devices and miscellaneous documents, according to the search warrant."
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Another point that didn't make it into the article, but is fairly obvious, is that the shooter was suicidal, and frequently mentioned wanting to die and while taking out as many people as possible in the process.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
(I haven't seen if there was other reporting about the father being aware of all the guns, but I haven't really looked for anything about this. There are mentions of going to shooting ranges with friends/family, so maybe?)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
No. The shooter was learning (very basic/elementary) Russian. When I taught first-year Russian, a lot of students did the same thing to practice Cyrillic, and feel cool in writing in a sorta secret language. That part didn't really feel odd to me, it was just obnoxious to read.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
Didn't live with the father. The shooter describes trying to hide guns from a guy they were crashing with after a breakup with their girlfriend.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
We don't talk about politics in this piece, it's just focused on the planning. The politics stuff would need an entirely other article. But yes they are very racist (and talk endlessly about being racist in the diaries), are anti-Semitic, etc. And extremely edgelord about it.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
In sum: the church/school were chosen because of an obsession with hurting and killing children (this was extremely disturbing to read in the diary), and it being a soft target compared to a Trump rally or a political assassination (Trump/Musk/Nazis/"execs of greedy megacorps" are mentioned).
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
(The diary explicitly describes dismissing a plan to attack a Trump rally partly because of the prospect of many armed rally participants)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
The shooter constantly talked about looking out for other people with guns, thinking that some "old fart" may be armed, and in previous plans about a music venue, being convinced that a lot of "trans girls" may be armed. (I assume it's a popular venue in the trans community?)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
The diaries describe multiple scouting / recon trips to the church, including one at Sunday Mass a few weeks before the shooting. The diaries describe going to meet with a church official to assess security under the guise of volunteering for church music service.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
The shooter considered many targets, including a Trump rally, mosque, synagogue, grocery store, and theater. The first plan was to attack a music venue in Minneapolis, with detailed plans on the layout, how to approach, etc. This was later abandoned for the church/school target.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
The vast majority of the writing is not at all interesting -- it's the same tropes you see in every manifesto, diary, etc. from mass shooters. It was written in what was described as a light "cipher" -- English transliterated into mistake-filled Russian, and a few Russian words.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent
As the kids say, skill issue
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social)
The diaries of the Minnesota school shooter go for over 250 pages. I've spent the last few days reading them. The writing is full of self-hatred, detailed planning, and obsessions with inflicting pain & suffering. From Julie Bosman, me, and Jeff Ernst: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/30/u...

Pretty straightforward to see the sequence of events here. Reuters was livestreaming from this staircase on August 25th, as they had each day on August 18-22. The camera operator was killed in one of the two strikes (most of those killed were in the second one, at the same spot)
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social) reply parent

See Younis's thread from earlier: x.com/ytirawi/stat... Reuters streamed there back in July and all last week. The AP has also streamed there from the same staircase location overlooking Khan Younis.

Israel justified its strike on the Nasser Hospital, which killed six journalists and more than a dozen others, by claiming a "Hamas" camera was set up there. The location they attacked is where Reuters and the AP livestream. From me and others (see byline/contribs) www.nytimes.com/2025/08/26/w...

There was that silly and fun "Digging a Hole" game on Steam that cost like $10. And now there are at least 5 (I don't think I'm even exaggerating) AI clone slop games on the Playstation store imitating it, like "Fantasy Digging a Hole Simulator", etc.
Aric Toler (@aric.bsky.social)
A very simple executive order Trump could do to gain +20 with 18-35 men is to force Sony and Nintendo to ban slop on their game stores. It's insane looking through the catalogues, with hentai games on Switch (?!) and "Recycling Center Simulator" and "Life in [Airpot] Terminal Simulator" in PS store

100%, I could write a book about my feelings about the show but losing that vibe was maybe worse than losing Duchovny and the main lore going totally off the rails.

If it wasn't for that school and water tank in the background, I wouldn't have recognized the scene from the image from just 48 hours ago. The IDF has been very thorough in destroying neighborhoods in Rafah proper and north of the town, and now they're working in the northwest parts of the city.

There is a *lot* more destruction visible in this video that was not in the May 11th satellite image from Planet. Parts of the Tel Sultan neighborhood were relatively (compared to the rest of Rafah) unharmed. Now, it looks like the IDF is now destroying this large residential area.
