I love this. You approach this with an artist’s curiosity.
For me, if I am drawn to an artist’s work in general, I love being surprised at seeing work in person, but it often starts from seeing some of their work online to help me get to know their style and voice.
What do you prefer? If there is an art show near where you live, would you rather preview the work online and go to the show if you feel drawn to it, or be surprised and go out to see the work in person without having seen it online first?
Paintings take time. It’s amazing how much pressure there is to post on social media; I feel it. But I’d much rather be a slow burn, making artwork that comes to life at the right time.

I have observed that many evangelical Christians don’t truly believe what they preach. They harshly judge outsiders while giving themselves extreme grace for the very things they preach against. May they continue to be judged by their own judgement and leave reasonable free-thinkers alone.

In the lead-up to the release of Lorde’s fourth album, “Virgin,” the singer’s social media was riddled with hints of what might come. What fans weren’t expecting, however, was to open her new vinyl record and find a close-up shot of her vulva, captured through a pair of unzipped clear pants.

I love this so much. The smile. The action. The textures.
I’ve come to realize something: I paint my feelings. Sometimes I meditate on a piece for a while before putting brush to paper. During life drawing sessions, when the timer is running, it forces me to explore what I am feeling in real time. Exploring feelings is what makes me love painting so much.
The thing about watercolor painting is that it takes a lot of practice. Today I started something that I loved, but then took it too far, tried to do a bit of correction, and ruined the whole piece. It’s frustrating, but today’s work was a valuable lesson for me. I know the next one will be amazing!

I've done a lot of figure studies, but not that many of myself. No matter how body positive one is and how much beauty it's easy to see in others, it's never the same when looking at yourself. Each year I draw a birthday portrait, here's some warm-ups for this year's. Difficult on many levels.
I love this painting. It’s full of artistry and imperfections. Her hand in the book almost looks detached from her body, which makes me smile.
Wow! I feel that my words to describe this are inadequate: power, yearning, confidence, and vulnerability, all wrapped into one image.
That time opened new worlds for a lot of us! It’s nice to hear you had a similar experience.
This book is a record of that time. It holds the memory of going inward, reaching outward, and slowly returning to the physical spaces that first nurtured my work. It marks five years of figurative painting, spanning pre- and post-pandemic life. artofjosh.gallery/hardcover
I found myself drawing with people in different time zones, different languages, all showing up for the same reason—to keep making art through uncertainty.
But something unexpected happened. Out of that isolation, a beautiful shift took place: online figure drawing communities began to form. Artists and models from around the world came together, needing connection, needing to create.
Before 2020, I spent my evenings painting from life at local figure drawing groups—spaces that felt like home, full of quiet focus and shared curiosity. When the pandemic hit, those gatherings disappeared overnight. I went into lockdown unsure of when, or if, we’d return to those rhythms.
