You are so right! Overdying can be magic. Worth looking at pictures and searching posts to get a rough sense of what's possible. duckduckgo.com?q=overdying&... Experimenting can really pay off. Just start with a few thrifted items before you do your favorite blouse.
Aunt Ruth (@auntruth.bsky.social) reply parent
PS - You may be way ahead of all this! Ignore if you know it already. (Seeing that you're not into sewing made it feel less likely that you've done things with modern dyes.)
Aunt Ruth (@auntruth.bsky.social) reply parent
Before you do it, research the choices & process www.dylon.co.uk/dyes/how-to/... & www.dylon.co.uk/dyes/upcycli... Before using a washer, learn how: thegigabrain.com/search/can%2... Think ahead about how you'll clean up, and handle dye with care and mindfulness. No regrets, & you may fall in love.
Aunt Ruth (@auntruth.bsky.social) reply parent
And, gloriously enough, I think that advice works best with black dye. As long as the garment's fabric will take the dye (compare its label and dye info) you're likely to end up with black, or with a very dark value of the original hue - which can be a handsome surprise.
