7:40pm, 3rd September 1939. Off the north-west coast of Ireland, the heavily-laden passenger liner SS Athenia was hit by a torpedo, fired by the German U-Boat U-30 under Lt Fritz-Julius Lemp. She began to settle by the stern and all 26 of her lifeboats were launched. 🧵 1/10

Great thread Brian, cheers 😊 There's an interesting article on these guns by Sergei Vinogradov in Warship 2023. Based on that, 7 of the barrels are still extant, 4 in Finland and 3 in Russia - a pretty impressive result and quite possibly one unmatched by any other since-scrapped battleship.

The ship whose guns travelled further than she did. The Russian dreadnought Imperator Alexsandr III was the third and final ship of the Imperatritsa Mariya class battleships built for the Imperial Black Sea fleet. She was launched in 1914 before the outbreak of the Great War.🧵 #NavalHistory

I don't want to write a piece that's lost in the noise. Suffice it to say that with the end of the #SecondWorldWar came also the death of the Japanese Empire, aged but 77 years. Its corpse remained for two years, but its spirit never left the weatherdeck of the Missouri, 80 years ago today.

According to Captain Murray's recollections, MacArthur's signature was published in an old newspaper article, and Halsey printed out his signature on the spot, while Murray signed each one individually for safekeeping.

+1 for O'Hara's book. I found the chapter (on the landings overall, not just at Casablanca) in Auphan's "The French Navy in World War 2" good for the French perspective, and for the US perspective the relevant chapter in Stern's "The US Navy and the War in Europe".

Witnesses to the surrender on USS Missouri #OTD in 1945 received a souvenir card. Some officials in the U.S. requested the extra copies, but CAPT Stuart Murray insisted they were only for those present. The unused cards were burned, and the printing plates were thrown overboard.

At 04:45 on 1 September 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Westerplatte, Danzig, Poland. German troops then stormed the defences, but Polish soldiers continued to resist until, a week later, they ran out of ammunition and surrendered.

Mayda, with its many pseudonyms, is one of the most enduring phantom islands of the North Atlantic, though its origin is largely unknown. Its signature crescent shape first appears in 1367 with the label Brazir, with the more common name of Mayda appearing only later in 1553.

1 Sept 1944 // Minesweeper MMS 117 was sweeping in the harbour of Civitavecchia, Italy, when her stern was blown apart by a large explosion. She sank very quickly with only two survivors from her crew of nineteen. It was presumed that she had triggered a magnetic mine. #RoyalNavy #WW2
