That timeline’s chances evaporated about an hour after I posted that, to be honest
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s just quite disheartening when there’s people you get on with and you’re pretty sure would miss you a little if you just disappeared, but they have very little to say about this country’s institutional capture by a hate movement directed at people like you
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
(Obviously aware that the chances of me, specifically, being attacked is low. I wouldn’t be petrified of leaving the house or anything. But the chances won’t be zero)
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social)
Been thinking there’s definitely people on here I’m friendly with and have no desire to stop being friendly with, but if I got attacked in public for being trans (when I start transitioning) and they offered me sympathy, I would flip a lid
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
“Trans people shouldn’t be beaten up for using the toilet”, probably

Helen Lewis's piece in The Atlantic on the Linehan arrest includes this about Lucy Connolly which I found interesting. I'm not sure if this would have been how she'd frame that case a week ago.

Elizabeth Taylor (@elizabethtaylor47.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
There is a curious thing I keep noticing on the broader left where if trans women specifically are the subject of bigotry, it is somehow seen as of secondary importance. Ie GNC cis women as unintended targets of bathroom bans - yes that’s awful, but many seem to neglect to mention is also
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
(Using “Left” in a very broad sense)
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably, yeah
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social)
Obviously what’s happening with Glinner is pretty similar to the Lucy Connolly stuff, getting people to assume it was more minor than it was by saying they were “arrested for tweets”, but feel like there was a broader left pushback on the narrative with Connolly whereas its more sporadic here
ʟɪɴᴇs (@lines.snail.skin) reposted
I am finding the fact that "is it acceptable and proportional to call for trans women to be assaulted in public" is now a subject of public debate in the UK really very upsetting.
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree, but ultimately the press have found an attack with bite so it’s going to be pretty tough to weather
Elizabeth Taylor (@elizabethtaylor47.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Also I’m probably very out of step with my fellow lefties on this, and I do know her a bit on a personal level so am biased. But if that is the advice her lawyers gave her then I don’t think she’s done anything so wrong? When I bought my house I just did what my lawyers told me.
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Not exactly expecting people pissed off with Labour/members of other parties to defend a Labour minister, but you probably should recognise that this story is bad if you oppose Labour from the left. This fundamentally benefits Starmer, which in turn benefits Reform
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
My gut reaction is this isn’t career-ending, but it probably means she’ll have to build herself back up from the backbenches. Which probably means Starmer stays until late into the Parliament out of sheer inertia
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I do not particularly care about the story itself, but it’s obviously gonna make the PLP more skittish about ousting Starmer with Rayner as the most likely replacement
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social)
This, err, may have been badly-timed
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Speaking of right-wing sneering at Rayner, this tweet of mine is still very much relevant
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, you definitely get the sense some people have absorbed right-wing sneering at her. That she inherently should be taken less seriously than someone like Starmer
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social)
I try not to put Rayner on a pedestal because I know she’d disappoint me as leader in a lot of ways, but whenever people go “yeah, but who could replace Starmer though?” I kinda want to scream
Jack Harvey (@eljackinton.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
I also hate how this ignores the fact that this is the exact role smaller parties are supposed to play in the political ecosystem. Even if you can't get a majority, you can act as pressure for your nominally aligned major party to tilt in your ideological direction. This exactly how Nige got brexit.

Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I also find those arguments weird because, like, it wouldn’t actually be better for what’s happening in Gaza to be happening in Uganda instead? (Though obviously I understand why Palestinians would think “why couldn’t it have been anywhere but here?”)

This isn’t the US, where the Dems would need a supermajority in both Houses and also the legislatures of the vast majority of states to do electoral reform
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, I’m not inherently against lesser evilism, but it’s really grating to hear the whole “you may not like it, but that’s the system we have” routine when Labour could literally just change the electoral system?
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent

Starmerism is the view that it's all just 5 minute chunks and none of these chunks have anything to do with each other If you got him in the right interview you could get him to make a really strong pledge for Trans Rights, and it wouldn't matter because implementing it is in a different chunk
The Prophet Cassandra (@prophetcassandra.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
I think, with Starmer specifically, it's the lack of any wider thought. Everything is all extremely short term, there is no long term ideology or plan to slot things into, it's just "what's the right thing to say to get through the next 5 minutes?"
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I know they won’t because it’s only been a year since the election and blah blah blah, but he’s dead weight and every day he’s in office he is doing potentially irreversible damage to Labour. Get rid of him

Like I didn’t get how people couldn’t thread the needle - if Brianna couldn’t transition socially or medically, was forced to be called a boy at school, banned from girls toilets etc that’s somehow ok. But then Rishis jibe was wrong now she’s dead? Civility > material harm

Yeah, I hoped it was a sign of a turning point. But I knew it probably wasn’t
Elizabeth Taylor (@elizabethtaylor47.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Honestly I find the outrage about to grimly ironic at the time. The message seemed to be ‘transphobia is ok, unless a murder victim of transphobia’s relative happens to be nearby in which case it’s all a bit awkward’. I sideyed a lot of those applauding Starmer tbh

Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
The cynical assumption that it was insincere is also the more optimistic one, IMO. Part of why we are where we are is there are people who just straight up do not understand that they are doing us harm, so will never change because they think they’re one of the good ones
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I think what makes it worse is I suspect it was genuinely sincere outrage, and he just doesn’t see a contradiction in his head between that and *gestures*

Yeah, I only played it for the first time last year and it left a huge impression on me, so don’t really need it to be updated, it’s still basically a new game for me. (I am at least grateful you can get the original on modern systems, unlike with the Demon’s Souls remake)
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure how that would work, to be honest. And we aren’t really a motivating cause for the left splintering, Your Party is much more about inaction on Gaza
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve soured on this style of remake, to be honest (though I’m not playing Delta, so can’t judge it specifically). Think it’s much more disrespectful to create something that replaces an original game vs. an RE4-style remake that complements the original
Julianna 💎 (@batariangal.bsky.social) reply parent
And it’s the fact that she decided to do that whilst the Greens were holding a leadership contest with Zack as the front runner that’s the most puzzling
