It’s just quite disheartening when there’s people you get on with and you’re pretty sure would miss you a little if you just disappeared, but they have very little to say about this country’s institutional capture by a hate movement directed at people like you

There is a curious thing I keep noticing on the broader left where if trans women specifically are the subject of bigotry, it is somehow seen as of secondary importance. Ie GNC cis women as unintended targets of bathroom bans - yes that’s awful, but many seem to neglect to mention is also

Obviously what’s happening with Glinner is pretty similar to the Lucy Connolly stuff, getting people to assume it was more minor than it was by saying they were “arrested for tweets”, but feel like there was a broader left pushback on the narrative with Connolly whereas its more sporadic here
I am finding the fact that "is it acceptable and proportional to call for trans women to be assaulted in public" is now a subject of public debate in the UK really very upsetting.

Not exactly expecting people pissed off with Labour/members of other parties to defend a Labour minister, but you probably should recognise that this story is bad if you oppose Labour from the left. This fundamentally benefits Starmer, which in turn benefits Reform
My gut reaction is this isn’t career-ending, but it probably means she’ll have to build herself back up from the backbenches. Which probably means Starmer stays until late into the Parliament out of sheer inertia
I do not particularly care about the story itself, but it’s obviously gonna make the PLP more skittish about ousting Starmer with Rayner as the most likely replacement

I try not to put Rayner on a pedestal because I know she’d disappoint me as leader in a lot of ways, but whenever people go “yeah, but who could replace Starmer though?” I kinda want to scream
I also hate how this ignores the fact that this is the exact role smaller parties are supposed to play in the political ecosystem. Even if you can't get a majority, you can act as pressure for your nominally aligned major party to tilt in your ideological direction. This exactly how Nige got brexit.

Starmerism is the view that it's all just 5 minute chunks and none of these chunks have anything to do with each other If you got him in the right interview you could get him to make a really strong pledge for Trans Rights, and it wouldn't matter because implementing it is in a different chunk
I think, with Starmer specifically, it's the lack of any wider thought. Everything is all extremely short term, there is no long term ideology or plan to slot things into, it's just "what's the right thing to say to get through the next 5 minutes?"

The cynical assumption that it was insincere is also the more optimistic one, IMO. Part of why we are where we are is there are people who just straight up do not understand that they are doing us harm, so will never change because they think they’re one of the good ones

Lib Dems have been a little flaky, but better than Labour. Scottish Greens have a good track record. English Greens more mixed, *but* they just elected a pro-trans leader today, so things are looking up in that department
