Known for its graceful, fluid movements and spiritual depth, it often depicts themes like Raas Leela, blending intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and vibrant costumes to convey devotion and storytelling.

A woman playing Lord Krishna can symbolize the transcendence of gender in devotion, aligning with the Vaishnavite idea that all souls are equal in their love for Krishna. It also reflects Manipur’s relatively progressive gender norms, where women have historically held significant roles in dance and society.

The women characters are dressed in doll-like Potloi costumes. Potloi or Polloi (literally,

Raas Leela, based on the devotional theme of Krishna and Radha. The Raas Leela depicts the cosmic dance of Krishna and the cowherd maidens. The beautiful embroidered skirts of the dancers, long and flared from the waist, and the translucent veils, along with Krishna's costume with the tall peacock feather crown, add to the radiant appearance of this dance, as the performers sway and twirl to an ascending tempo.

The Gerewol festival is an annual courtship ritual and beauty pageant held by the Wodaabe, a nomadic Fulani subgroup in Niger. The men paint their faces with red ochre, often mixed with clay or saffron, to create striking red or orange hues that highlight their features.

The red face paint, especially prominent among clans like the Sudosukai, serves to emphasize facial symmetry, a long nose, and expressive charm, qualities prized by the women. The men spend hours preparing, using mirrors to perfect their look, and wear elaborate costumes with feathers and beads to appear taller and more striking. During the Yaake dance, they roll their eyes and bare their teeth to showcase stamina and beauty, aiming to impress female judges who may choose them as lovers or husbands, even if either party is already married.

This tradition, held at the end of the rainy season (late September or early October), is a cultural cornerstone for the Wodaabe, reflecting their emphasis on beauty and social bonds. Losers are criticized and mocked by judges for failing to live up to the stringent boodal criteria. In Niger, men often use a superior orange powder from Jongooria, requiring long journeys to obtain it.
