Interesting, relevant paper on how gamers can get radicalized from participating in the online communities associated with the games they play.

The Bears are up 3 late, Cowboys force a 3 and out. Bears punt. Ball hits the SkyCam, Cowboys lineman returns it for a TD. After review, it's confirmed the call on the field is too cool to overturn. Play stands. Bears lose a timeout.

Think the coalition issue is smaller than some of the other structural issues. $1bn gets spent on TV ads in a handful of states every 4 years instead of on long-term projects like relational organizing, civic infrastructure, and media platforms.

Restricted to the federal level, that's not a bad bet with Cuellar the last anti-choice incumbent. But it misses the point that this is designed to amplify the centrist/popularist faction's belief that the near-universal support for reproductive rights cost votes and possibly the majority.
Andrew (@beatorganizer.bsky.social)
Klein and other centrist/popularist pundits are both speaking to and speaking for party members, donors, and fundraisers who influence candidate recruitment, funding, messaging, and spending.
Andrew (@beatorganizer.bsky.social) reply parent
Would suggest there are also issues of attention, salience, and credibility. One thing the referenda campaigns have going for them is not backing down on that issue. And a lot of the time what defines candidates in competitive districts is trying to seem safe and not talk about anything contested.

The biggest fight of at least the last decade is whether the dominant mode of politics is friend-enemy or pluralist-technocratic. Many people reached power and gained audiences by acting like politics is 1 way. But now it's the other.
Andrew (@beatorganizer.bsky.social) reply parent
Personally, if I was building a popular front, I'd do it by finding common values like defending our freedoms, our families, and our future from a government by the bullies, of the bigots, for the billionaires. And bringing people into the coalition who believe in those values not compromising mine.

The kind of triangulation being pitched lowers the thermostat and is at odds with Pritzker's call to action. Who's mobilizing for triangulation? And the special elections are showing that the electorate is responding to something other than the kind of cues Klein's proposing, anyway.
Andrew (@beatorganizer.bsky.social) reply parent
This whole conversation hinges on 1) '26 and '28 elections being the key and 2) those electorates responding more or less on trend with the past few decades. Re 1) we have Pritzker out here saying we need public action by civil society now. And re 2) we have some reason to reconsider.
