Restricted to the federal level, that's not a bad bet with Cuellar the last anti-choice incumbent. But it misses the point that this is designed to amplify the centrist/popularist faction's belief that the near-universal support for reproductive rights cost votes and possibly the majority.
Klein and other centrist/popularist pundits are both speaking to and speaking for party members, donors, and fundraisers who influence candidate recruitment, funding, messaging, and spending.
Would suggest there are also issues of attention, salience, and credibility. One thing the referenda campaigns have going for them is not backing down on that issue. And a lot of the time what defines candidates in competitive districts is trying to seem safe and not talk about anything contested.

These things are best understood as an estimate of salience or attention. Similar thing with how much of the budget people thought went to foreign aid they didn't approve of.
People who built careers on seeming to be the reasonable, serious, conciliatory adults in the room. They think their careers depend on maintaining that pose. And maybe they're right. If they suddenly became fighters, who'd take that as genuine? Even their good posts are met with derision now.
The biggest fight of at least the last decade is whether the dominant mode of politics is friend-enemy or pluralist-technocratic. Many people reached power and gained audiences by acting like politics is 1 way. But now it's the other.
Personally, if I was building a popular front, I'd do it by finding common values like defending our freedoms, our families, and our future from a government by the bullies, of the bigots, for the billionaires. And bringing people into the coalition who believe in those values not compromising mine.
They're not insurmountable effects but institutional party recruitment and bundler networks do make an impact.
They're hiding power politics behind an appeal to common sense. "Of course median public opinion, median votes, and marginal votes are a perfect circle, how could it be otherwise?"

This whole conversation hinges on 1) '26 and '28 elections being the key and 2) those electorates responding more or less on trend with the past few decades. Re 1) we have Pritzker out here saying we need public action by civil society now. And re 2) we have some reason to reconsider.
