Love this thread. It makes me think about how the propaganda&lies told about Jews is anathema to Judaism &how we live as Jews. Before the early 19th Cent. Jews simply lived Jewishly in their communities. Denominations of practice began with Reform in the 1800’s in Europe to modernize&integrate.
People can get very defensive about blind spots in their knowledge. Sir, I'm not calling you ignorant or antisemitic, I'm just telling you that you are mistaken about this one thing! (Doubling down on your mistaken take might make you ignorant and/or antisemitic, though.)
In general, it's just super easy not to be an argumentative, pedantic, smug asshole about someone else's religion - or anything else you know nothing about that the person you're talking to has actual knowledge of - and more people should try it.
If you, an atheist, make a statement about religion as a whole, & someone from a non-Christian religion says, "Actually, we don't believe that or practice that way," the correct response is, "Huh, I didn't realize that," & NOT "nuh-uh, you're in denial about your own faith that I've never studied."
I wasn't raised as an observant Jew. My parents sent me to cultural Jewish Sunday School, not Hebrew school. One of the first things the rabbi said at the first synagogue I attended in college was, "You can never set foot in a synagogue and be a good Jew." And this is not wildly rare in a rabbi!
Judaism does not require a belief in God. Judaism requires that you live your life according to the principles that are set out by "God" in our Bible, but you can believe that's metaphor, and if you live according to those principles, you're a good Jew. Rabbis are teachers, not messengers of God.
But EVERY DAMN TIME a Jew points out that Christian-centric atheists are, in fact, Christian-centric & their blanket statements don't apply to Judaism, somebody who knows nothing about Judaism comes along to argue & basically claim the Jew is wrong/lying unless they convince him, Atheist Joe.
There are religions whose beliefs I don't fully understand! They might have tenets that go against what my idea of religion is. I don't, therefore, tell them that their religion is fake or that they don't understand their religion or they're lying to make a point on the internet. B/c that's nuts.
