So why do so many people shy away from anger to the point of telling other queers that they are doing queerness wrong by expressing anger....? It's the angry lesbians that get shit done. It's the angry people who CREATE the space for queer joy. There is no queer joy w/o queer anger.
Queer anger, queer frustration, and queer rage are so policed from within the community in a way that makes me question what the goals of some of these people are. Anger is powerful; it's an energizing and invigorating emotion. It's a motivating emotion. Without queer anger, we would have no rights.

On the other hand, you can have very high-stakes conflict "feel" boring or irrelevant if the reader is not invested in your characters. Grimdark comics trying to emulate Watchmen are a good example: misery porn that missed the "point" of artistic depictions of pain, hurt, loss, grief, trauma.
The thing about conflict is that it's a value neutral tool. You can have very low-stakes conflict "feel" really important. Most commercial romance books operate on really low-stakes conflict - like miscommunication - by grounding and connecting you with the character experiencing those emotions.
One issue I find in low-stakes conflict books is that the narrative gives the characters what they so badly want far too early. Which is nice! What a lovely world to live in... but then there are No Stakes. There's no story at that point.
Here are two examples from both ends of the spectrum. Spoilers for Rise of the Skywalker and The Magicians (2015). RoS had one of the worst "Happy Endings" I've ever seen on screen in my life because it was not set up and actively broke the themes of the last several movies.

Peters herself frames her works in genre terms, rather than as litfic, which I found interesting given that she's firmly marketed and treated as a litfic writer.
Finished Stag Dance, interesting collection but it does suffer from a pretty obvious 'we're gonna collect all her material in one place' without thematic core to link them together--the newest material and the longest, Stag Dance, is in a completely different mode and genre from the rest.

By nature, stories that are about nicey nice nice (even if it occasionally disrupts the nicey nice nice with 'slightly naughty' and 'mildly mean things') have no catharsis because they were never building any tension.
People are talking about whether happy endings are 'earned' but IMO that's not the point, the point is, are these characters interesting? Do I care about their happy endings? Does the ending, happy or unhappy, provide catharsis for the story?

Like characters who primarily have a nice time with the occasional mild disruption are... well they're not for me, at any rate. IMO it's tricky to show psychological depth if the characters don't get subjected to a little shock.

Stag Dance is odd in that it's not really litfic--it's historical fiction and doesn't have the 'form' of litfic, with a tint of horror even.
