Of course it’s historic. How else would remember that single family zoning began in Berkeley

Swap Ava with Kat. Zero chance he puts up Ava

Ava can’t play for HOH

Toni Atkins is a good option. She has a pretty good record on housing in the state senate. She was a lead author of SB 9 (2022) alongside Scott Weiner, which abolished single family zoning in CA.

The 5 year vacancy requirement is going to stop anything from being redeveloped. It’s going to be a flop like SB 9 all over again
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
We’re still missing reforms for missing middle housing. Previous bill SB 9 that allows for duplexes and lot splits needs some serious improvements.

If it were up to me the fighting would end today and every Palestinian and their descendants who were kicked out during Nakba would be allowed back into Israel and granted full citizenship. But what I’m not going to do is use my anger towards Israel to excuse violence against Jews in America.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
To us Jews it doesn’t feel complicated. We see the violence committed yesterday as violence against us. We see it as antisemitism. We feel the hatred that was targeted in that attack. To us it doesn’t matter what their views of the war are. To us they are Jews.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Antisemitism is historically malleable, and it’s tied to conspiracies in a way that cuts across partisan lines. To say it only exists from one source ignores the reality that us Jews face. Antisemitism can take many forms including an extreme, perverted and violent form of anti-Israel sentiment.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
When the US put Japanese Americans in internment camps, was that racism or just a “misguided reaction”? It may not seem like antisemitism to you, but to the Jews who experience this hate it is very real. You are entirely justified in your anger at the war, but don’t excuse antisemitism.

Genuine question: why is this successful while SB 9 is not? What can CA take from this and implement in our own system?
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Indoctrinating the youth. I love to see it.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Investing is only half the issue. Why is SJ spending 5 billion on tunnel boring instead of cut and cover for BART? Why is LA considering a monorail for the Sepulveda line? Why is it taking 50 years to complete CAHSR? The state needs to be better at managing transit projects.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
CA’s conventional highways are key parts of our communities and key parts of our lives. As CA continues to grow, much of this growth will be centered around these corridors. That is why I am calling on @cayimby.bsky.social to push forward legislation that will support growth and improve the streets
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Currently, local communities want to improve these streets, but face pushback from the state. It should be the other way around, with state wanting to improve the streets and the local communities happily allowing them.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Additionally, these are among the hardest streets to improve, with safety projects often taking decades to be implemented. In large part, state ownership of these highways acts as a barrier to improvements because of bureaucracy and car-centric standards in caltrans
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Additionally, these are among the deadliest streets in the state. In the Bay Area, the top five deadliest streets are all state owned Highways. Emphasizing the need for multimodal transportation along these roads.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
These highways, streets like El Camino in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties and Santa Monica Blvd. in LA, serve downtowns and important commercial corridors throughout CA, making them incredibly capable of supporting additional housing.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
The state should also require caltrans to update its standards for conventional highways during SHOPP repaving and highway reconstruction to prioritize pedestrians, bikers, and transit.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social)
@muhammadspeaks.bsky.social @cayimby.bsky.social I think the CA YIMBY team should support legislation to improve housing construction along state conventional highways. The state should update zoning to allow for more housing units along these key commercial corridors. -🧵
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
This is such a dumb argument. At the existing 50% requirement there is no incentive to build at all. The lower 20% requirement provides an actual incentive to build affordable housing alongside market rate housing. Thus creating more affordable units than previously.

High inequality, rising political violence, and the richest men are dominating politics. We’re living in a 2nd Gilded Age. Maybe #Democrats should resurrect Teddy Roosevelt and run him on the ticket in 2028.

Democrats need in 2028 to embrace the message of rebuilding American Democracy, both politically and economically. Return to the progressivism that brought an end to the Gilded Age.

Most industries are still functioning pretty well. We’re still doing better off than during the Gilded Age, and that’s when capitalism was at its most extractive.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like some industries resemble less of the innovation and improved quality of goods we might expect from capitalism, and instead are more emblematic of the extractive industries of pre-capitalist feudalism. That’s what happens when you don’t have regulations curbing the power of monopolists

The Democratic Party needs to embrace more democratic and inclusive systems. Embrace mechanisms that allow for greater input within our bureaucracy; and create barriers to the powerful and wealthy special interest groups that dominate.
Benpiece (@benpiece.bsky.social) reply parent
Republicans have slashed bureaucracy, allowing corporations to grow in power unimpeded. Democrats failed to respond by not creating greater inclusion and representation within our bureaucracy. Instead, Democrats have relied on a technocracy that means well but does not reflect the people’s will.
