Photo of a press pass that has been sliced through diagonally. For the past eight years I have worked as a stringer for Reuters news agency. My photos covering stories in the prairie provinces have been published by the New York Times, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets across North America, Asia, Europe, and elsewhere. At this point it's become impossible for me to maintain a relationship with Reuters given its role in justifying and enabling the systematic assassination of 245 journalists in Gaza. I owe my colleagues in Palestine at least this much, and so much more. When Israel murdered Anas Al-Sharif, together with the entire Al-Jazeera crew in Gaza City on August 10, Reuters chose to publish Israel's entirely baseless claim that Al-Sharif was a Hamas operative - one of countless lies that media outlets like Reuters have dutifully repeated and dignified. Reuters' willingness to perpetuate Israel's propaganda has not spared their own reporters from Israel's genocide. Five more journalists, including Reuters cameraman Hossam Al-Masri, were among 20 people killed this morning in another attack on Nasser hospital. It was what's known as a Western media is directly culpable for creating the conditions in which this can happen. As Jeremy Scahill from Drop Site News put it, It did not compel them to come to his defence when he appealed to international media for protection after an Israeli military spokesperson posted a video making clear their intention to assassinate him following a report he did on the growing famine. It did not compel them to report on his death honestly when he was hunted and killed weeks later. I have valued the work that I brought to Reuters over the past eight years, but at this point I can't conceive of wearing this press pass with anything but deep shame and grief. I don't know what it means to begin to honour the courage and sacrifice of journalists in Gaza - the bravest and best to ever live - but going forward I will direct whatever contributions I have to offer with that front of mind.

62% of younger deaths wouldn't have happened in any other wealthy country. And Reagan is literally to blame. www.vice.com/en/article/a...

Screenshot:. Zoom out, and the picture gets clearer. As Futurism’s Joe Wilkins points out, America’s excess death problem stretches back to 1980, the year Ronald Reagan took office and rolled out a red carpet for neoliberalism. His policies slashed social programs, deregulated industries, gutted worker protections, and handed power to corporations on a platter. Nearly every administration after has been maintaining or hastening Reagan’s destruction ever since. The result is a shredded safety net, skyrocketing inequality, and a healthcare system that bankrupts people for getting sick. Millennials and Gen Z are the first generations raised entirely under this tattered economic system that cares more about profits than people. They came of age with fewer stable jobs, unaffordable homes, and decaying public services.

The law isn’t exogenous. It’s not self enforcing. if a law is meaningful someone has to do the hard work of enforcing it and we collectively don’t seem to have the appetite to do that. People will say “the constitution doesn’t allow x, y, or z” which is only true if someone will enforce it. 3/x

Talk of Lotara Sarrin reminded me I actually had questions for Aunt Agony, in particular one from a woman who wishes to remain anonymous but has feminist concerns! (sherdenpact.neocities.org/AgonyAunt#eq...) Obviously I gave what is in 40k world the most controversial issue the treatment it deserved

``Dear Aunt Agony, I'm struggling with hate in my heart. I find I just hate men more than women. It’s not that I wake up every morning planning not to loathe women, it’s just that every time a man opens his mouth, something terrible happens. Women can’t compete! Men strut around with misplaced confidence, acting as if the world owes them a round of applause for saying something silly. Whereas the women I know are, at best, a bit vain. Men seem to think they’re on top of everything, but emotionally speaking, most of them are still in junior-scholam. They can't name their feelings, and when confronted with the consequences of their actions, they either blink like confused infant-canids or get irrationally mad. They're impulsive, fragile, melodramatic... and yet somehow, somehow, they believe they should be running the world. It’s vile, awful, infuriating — inspirational! What can I do to fix this? I want to have hate in my heart for all, but as it stands it seems women just can’t compete. Thank you and worst wishes, B4tBG, Insufficiently Angry Feminist'' Dear Insufficiently Angry Feminist, Thanks for writing! And more than that, thanks for thinking you could come to me with this problem. Here at the Office for the Propagation of Pertinent Information we want people to know that even in our polarised, divisive times, we're not afraid to take on the big questions. In fact this is why our respected rivals over at the Office for Ceremonial Calculations developed the D.I.E. training programme. Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, and neither should you. But, hey, I get it. It's all very well and good having people tell you the slogans, but what I see in your note is someone who is struggling to feel in their heart the hate which you know intellectually Khorne has for us all. You don't need convicing of that truth, you need practical advice about how to live it - and that's what Aunt Agony is here to give you. Now, first of all, don't worry. I am not going to tell you that maybe you should hate men any less. Far be it from me to ever want to level down hatred! If anything, I think you might be going a bit too easy on men. Sure, it's pretty annoying how emotionally fragile they are -- but have you considered the possibility that maybe they are just pretending to be that way to manipulate you? When you think about it that would actually be more annoying, and having mauled many men in my day I can say I am something of an expert in their psychology. Let me tell you, they're not above that! So, let's get this straight; how ever much you're hating men, there's always room for more. However bad you think they are, they're probably worse. Keep that in mind! Second, we're going to aim higher than the rabble with our hatred here. A lot of other advice givers* will try and focus in on the cliché sources of annoyance to get you going. Hey, ever notice how women be selecting subsistence and consumption goods for the hab-block? Infuriating, right! Wrong. No one cares. We're not going to bore you with that, or stories about how sometimes women take too long when preparing to attend the mandatory team building social functions everyone in our Empire enjoys by law. Aunt Agony can do better than that. *(Reminder -- unlicensed opinion-offerers should be immediately reported to your local Mashkim Office upon discovery. Remember: snitches get stiches, while those who fail to snitch are left to bleed-out.) So instead what I am going to do is advise you to be proactive. Sure, women don't seem as bad to you now; but why think you are a passive agent in all this? You have the capacity to make all the women in your life worse, if only you set your mind to it. Interrupt them constantly. Praise them when they do well, but only the most condescending manner possible. Constantly explain things you know they understand better than you. Ask them to participate in your hobbies even though you have no reason to think they would enjoy that. Men have been doing these things for years, it's part of what makes them the inspirational figures you look up to right now! What's more, you'll find that once you do this, the women in your life will quickly make it apparent that they hate you - and it's always easier to hate someone back than to begin hating them. Not only will doing these things help you realise Khorne's glorious equality, but it will also make the women in your life worse, and what's more it will make you a worse person too. Everybody wins! S4tST, Aunt Agony.

The fact that Y'ALL GOT TAUGHT what Victorian and Edwardian scholars thought (white) people should think about the past does not mean that's actually what the past and its people were like. And it's not like the idea of civil rights kicked off in the 1960s.

People still: Look, we can't read history through a contemporary lens. There wasn't a consensus that slavery was wrong. Every 18th c. pamphlet: How can they do this? Are we SLAVES? In SLAVERY? The worst things you can be? Are they gonna put us IN CHAINS? Like in SLAVERY? Which is EVIL? Like SLAV-

from chandra manning's wonderful book "what this cruel war was over"

Nothing made slavery’s toxicity more obvious to Union troops than its effect on the fundamental unit of society, the family. For one thing, slave sales separated families. In the Upper South, where many Union soldiers were stationed in 1861, about one in three first marriages was broken by sale, and about half of all slave children were separated from at least one parent. 129 With their own eyes, soldiers saw slavery snap bonds between parents and children. The men of the Seventh Wisconsin were awakened by gunshots one November night. The following day, soldiers “learned, and saw the cause of the alarm in the form of two negro women—a mother and a daughter.” The pair had fled to Union lines to avoid the proposed sale of the “goodlooking” daughter into the so-called fancy trade, which soldiers viewed as a form of concubinage. Outraged by the plight and moved by the vulnerability of the mother and daughter, “every private in the ranks” cursed “that system which tramples on the honor of man, and makes merchandise of the virtue of women,” according to one member of the regiment. 130 When an Iowan encountered a young child about to be sold by her own father, who was also her master, he vowed, “By G–d I’ll fight till hell freezes over and then I’ll cut the ice and fight on.” 131

It’s undeniable at this point that we’re no longer a democracy on the federal level. The big question is whether we’re still in a state of competitive authoritarianism (where there are elections, but they’re not free) or whether we’ve crossed over into an autocratic regime.
