Also, sourdough is probably the OLDEST variety of bread in human history. We were making it BY ACCIDENT when environmental yeast got into our proto-bread dough and rose when baked.

You'll have to pardon me for likening this phenomena to transphobia, but it's an area where ignorance has been treated as not just the equivalent of knowledge, but superseding it. People are wrong about what they're talking about, loudly, and at scale, but treat experience as a corrupting influence.

Screenshot from a Tumblr post by ralfmaximus: Mozilla, in its finite wisdom, embedded LLM bots into recent versions of Firefox for the vitally-important purpose of… naming tab groups. Now, some users are noticing CPU and power usage spikes caused by a background process called Inference. Ugh. Reminder again for Firefox users to visit your about:config page, search for the browser.ml.chat.enabled key, and set that to false: If yours says true then double-click it until it reads false. Doing that turns off the AI chatbot features in Firefox, but also the stupid new LLM tab-naming feature that's rolling out

We have so /many/ examples of people who made a schtick of trolling Trump only to become his sycophants when convenient, so trolling Trump is zero proof of what someone will do in the future.

I used to know a guy who knew a guy. If that guy had known a third guy I think we could have fought Facebook in an alley and won

And if they just wave off the cash, being the kind of guy (or job) feed them, beer them, invite them to the next bbq. I know several guys, and they are awesome - and I'm part of the guy network, as I collect weird tools. They come to me for odd shaped things, things to undo odd shaped things...

Last week I called two plumbers for a tub/shower valve fix. Reg company wanted $1250, second one quoted me $2500. My SIL said, “I know a guy” who came and fixed it for $200 in less than an hour. Protect your local “Know a Guys” like the treasures they are. And pay in cash.

not having easy access to Guys has forced me to become a tiny plumbing Guy, light electrical Guy, CAD and 3D printing Guy, computer and networking Guy, garden Guy, and Guy who has a bunch of random tools. I am ready to take my place in the Guy Economy

critically: it’s just as important to know a guy as it is to be a guy that someone else knows

my father-in-law is a “I know a guy” Guy. sadly all the old Guys are aging out of the Guy Economy. Guys are fundamentally incompatible with Hustle Culture because it’s not about “winning” a deal, it’s about collecting favors and goodwill in a mutually-beneficial cycle. protect your local Guy Economy

“Having a guy” for a task is the number one most important thing you can do as you get older. We need to cultivate your guys, and the greatest honor is to be someone else’s “guy.”

also how writing generally is kinda considered something that magically happens in your spare time, which has come up as I've said "no sorry I'm working on a project" more assertively

I like how poetry is both a serious and very casual art form but it does get funny how many times a conversation goes like "oh a poet" "yep" "ever published?" "sure" "oh cool like self-published" "nope" as a slow realization comes that yes poets publish actual books

in college a creative writing major picked up a book on my desk with a blank cover, saw it was poetry, flipped to a page to read one, said "I guess this might survive one of their workshops" I then pointed out it's edgar allan poe so if it wouldn't I think his workshops might possibly be the problem

Was curious about what NASA stuff the Internet Archive might have and came across this gorgeous bit of cassette/diskette futurism: wind tunnel software and hardware at the Lewis Research Centre. The worm logo is so fitting for that kind of display. <3

A photo dated 1989 of two guys in comfy plaid check shirts at a pair of crt monitors (black frame with white casing), one pressing buttons on a slanted keyboard that has a bit of a retro feel even for 1989 while the other sports a headset and holding a black box. Vibrant and share schematics of a wind tunnel can be seen on one screen while a blue background with the red NASA worm logo is displayed on the other. credit Glenn Research Centre collection on IA.
