That's entirely reasonable. Therapy isn't for everyone, just like tax accountants aren't for everyone. All it is is a way of addressing a particular set of human problems.
Yeah, no easy way out of that ol' paradox. My hunch is that people who resonate with Kierkegaard's leap of faith probably do better in therapy than those who find no resonance there.
In part. Essentially it's 50% alliance (my therapist really gets me and I like our sessions), about 40% non specific factors present across all therapies (therapist listens, reflects, pays close attention), and maybe, *maybe* 10% specific factors that come down to a specific method.

The person's own level of buyin is Absolutely a part of the process. See Persuasion and Healing by Frank and Frank. Psychotherapy has its links to shamanism, as do many forms of persuasion. It's very humbling to realize a precious method is not some great secret sauce.
Industry spin is the opposite! "Our method is amazing and awesome. Only we can teach it. It will Change Your Life." It's when you wade into the deeper waters that you either humble yourself and get truly curious about the essence of psychological change or retreat into allegiance bias.
Yes, the masters like Albert Ellis or Aaron Beck worked very hard at turning therapy into something teachable, but it oversimplified what they themselves were doing in the clinical encounter. Does watching Picasso paint make you into an artist? I used to believe so, but now I really don't know. 8/8
You knew something very special was happening, something profound, but the attempt to break it down into a series of steps was kind of like a paint-by-numbers version of Sunflowers. In the final analysis, studying therapy outcomes is really hard, because it's unclear what "methods" even mean. 7/x
I saw this myself first hand when I had the chance to work with a superb but iconoclastic therapist with 6 decades of experience. He had tried to work out his method into something transferrable and teachable, but when you'd watch him work, it was like watching Picasso paint. 6/x
Learning a therapy method is really important as a therapist in training. It is a set of hand-holds, tools and maps of the terrain. It says, "Here are the problems you typically encounter, and these are the basic approaches." Eventually, you know the terrain so well that you no longer need maps. 5/x
I'd love to watch video of master therapists, regardless of their stated methodology, working with patients. My hunch is, for the Picassos of the craft, we probably would not be able to tell what their theoretical orientation is from watching them at work. Now why would I have such a hypothesis? 4/x
If CBT makes sense to you as a person, you'll naturally have more buy-in with a CBT therapist, so you're already a long way towards a good therapeutic alliance, which is what drives half the therapeutic result. My personal dream study has never been performed. 3/x
Well conducted trials of good CBT vs good psychodynaic therapy showed no differences at a population level, which is a fantastic result for an individual in the therapy marketplace. Why? Well, it comes back to the therapeutic alliance. 2/x
That question itself evolved over time. Back in the 80's and 90's, the methodology wars raged. CBT proponents would study CBT vs crappy psychodynamic therapy and would you look at that, CBT is better! Same with IPT, analysis, etc. Eventually, the field began embracing honesty and humility. 1/x
(I used to be a psychotherapy outcomes researcher with an interest in the conceptual foundations of psychotherapy, so I regularly bumped up against these issues for about 15 years professionally.)
Sure, but now we are moving away from science and into the philosophy of psychotherapy. What counts as therapy conceptually and what does not is a very important question, but it's not an especially tractable one empirically. It's a lot trickier than what counts as an appendectomy vs what does not.
Head-to-head research shows no significant differences between methods, but methods in themselves vs treatment as usual or wait-list controls show clear separation from chance, with d ranges from 0.3-0.8 (depression), 0.7-1+ (anxiety), 0.5-1.4 (PTSD), 0.3-0.5 (substance use), 0.2-0.9 (eating d/o)

Moncrieff is a long time antipsychiatric psychiatrist with a particular bent against medication, who considers antidepressants akin to alcohol or cannabis, i.e. numbing agents that don't meaningfully target symptoms. Her views are at serious odds with the evidence.
