Newsom is no untouchable idol. He is critiqued, lampooned, litigated â his policies dissected with relish by allies and adversaries alike.
By such logic, the mere act of brushing oneâs teeth would be authoritarian, and surviving a debate without pratfall would be proto-fascism.
To brand Newsom a âcult of personalityâ is intellectually specious and reductive. Charisma is not tyranny; eloquence is not enthrallment.
Further, itâs far too late for pearl-clutching â homeless and LGBTQ folks face more than a metaphorical bus in America today. Newsomâs 20+ year record is far more complex than your caricature.
Are you daft? Thatâs hardly a problem under Newsom. Heâs done more for LGBTQ and unhoused rights than youâre willing to credit him for. From same-sex marriage in 2004 to billions in housing and trans protections as governor.
What actually destroys rights isnât imperfect allies. Itâs apathy, disengagement, and purity tests that fracture coalitions. Thatâs the trap authoritarians count on.
So has he âthrown people under the busâ? No. Has he made calls that deserve critique? Absolutely. But donât erase twenty years of pro-LGBT action and billions invested in housing
The pattern across two decades is consistent: big moves for rights and housing, paired with tough enforcement that often hurts the most vulnerable.
On trans rights he signed refuge and anti-forced outing laws. He also vetoed AB 957 and made clumsy remarks on sports. Imperfect ally, not an enemy.
After the Supreme Courtâs Grants Pass ruling he leaned into sweeps and ordinances. That shift angered advocates, who see criminalization where he sees order.
Prop 1 in 2024 put $6.4B into treatment beds and housing. By 2025 he rolled out $3.3B in grants. That scale matters, even if it doesnât fix everything.
As governor he launched Roomkey and Homekey, moving thousands into hotels and motels converted into permanent housing. Real beds, not slogans.
On homelessness he created Project Homeless Connect, expanded care with Healthy SF, and pushed Care Not Cash; praised by some, blasted by others. Always carrots and sticks.
In 2004 as SF mayor, Newsom ordered same-sex marriages long before the national party found its courage. He took the lawsuits, the blowback, the risk. Thatâs receipts.
While Florida builds âalligator Alcatrazâ camps to score cruelty points, Californiaâs messier story is building housing, funding treatment, and enshrining LGBTQ protections. imperfect, but a different universe.
Purity tests and the collective memory of a goldfish is why Trump is in office. Look at the current federal administration and what is happening to your rights. Now compare that to Newsom's track record. It's not as if he's built a concentration camp and started kidnapping people of the streets.
