There wasn't really much story to start the adventure. You don't need a big cutscene or exposition, but you do need a better hook. It's like they expected I would just wander around like a rat in a maze, but they didn't offer any cheese. Like okay it's a video game, go play the video game. Ehh, no.
The first unlock was an attack I never used because it uses heal juice and the second was an attack I never used because it only refilled at checkpoints that are kinda far apart. Give me a damn dodge or something to make traversal less tedious! And give me more toys to incentivize moving forward.
Part of what made that annoying was enemies felt cheap. The flying guy is just above your attack height, so jump. The big guy doesn't flinch when he's hit, so jump. You can't attack diagonally, so a lot of them will come from that angle to ensure you get hit more unless spaz out all over the place.
I was only in the first few hours, but every area was running around some tedious little chunk of jumping and enemies, then I open a gate that lets me skip most of it. Uh, okay. I get it, "because metroidvania", but why? It's not really fun or engaging, it's just kinda there to take up space.
Silksong seems kinda dull. You have to buy a map for each area. Bah. Then you have to buy individual features of what a map does. What. And even once you've found those features, you have to pay more dumb beads to unlock them. Why. What if I could just find them and use them and it was good.
