Short Birds Nest Spruce with massive canopy. These trees (ground cover habit) seem like an easy species to cultivate as bonsai…due to their easy back budding and almost natural/inevitable pad formation. Getting them to spread vertically is a bit of a challenge… #Bonsai #MakeGoodChoices

When I did some research earlier in the year I was given the suggestion of using an onion or orange bag or the foot of some pantyhose to hold the substrate and then tie the moss to the outside of it. They also told me that the shape gets better with practice and that it comes down to how it’s tied
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks you, really appreciate the compliment!

Awesome, excited to see what you create!!! Mine have always turned out more of a pancake shape, lol. Hopefully I’ll get some good sheets of moss and can try again, saw some hanging one that I really want to give a try.

Great place to get pumice on the super cheap is landscape supply yards. Think I pay like $10 bucks a yard, I have to sort and wash it but I’d be doing that anyway
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
Important for conifers to slowly move them from their original soil to new substrates adding in a bit of the old each time. For pumice the ultra fines are washed away and the next size up I use with some sand for sage and plants like that
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I add very fine chopped sphagnum moss, bio char, bark, coco core, lil pete, lil used coffee grounds, some ph adjusters depending on species (usually fine chopped pine needles for low ph trees, dolomite magnesium or lime for high ph trees) sometimes pea gravel as a weight ballast if needed
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
Pumice with minimal organics really does help keep roots cool, silica is wonderful for that. It definitely needs to be washed well and sifted otherwise the fines can cake up drainage
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s a fair amount of folks down south of you in the Cascade ßonsai Society that use nearly 90% pumice and a couple that are 100% with wonderful results. Personally I hover around 80-85% as we get some gnarly high temps ‘nd im not always (do to health) able to water 3-4 time a day.

One of my oldest “ #bonsai ”…but the trunk’s a mess and had thickened into reverse taper before I got it. It barely qualifies…but in 8 weeks…it will be a showy beast of yellow, orange and red. I have tried to move it toward a path of legitimacy…but will instead just appreciate it for what it is.
Bonsai Zen (@bonsaizen.bsky.social) reply parent
Maples can be ornery like that and unless you’re able to thicken the trunk below the best option that’s worked for me is to create a leader from the next lowest branch below the inverse. I’ve been told that if you can keep all the branches in and above the taper “weak” it can help trunk catch up.

Indeed, adds pressure and in some odd way also makes decisions easier, as I just asks “what would they do?” Certainly added to an inner layer of glass is the longest lasting yet if I ever do it again in the future I will for sure ware a full respirator, a simple mask (or bandanna) doesn’t cut it.

If you’re misting the moss daily watering them once a week and a lil more when flowering is probably good, maybe a bit more frequent if your house is very dry. Also a humidity tray helps both the moss and orchids immensely.
