it's the *700th* episode of the frow show on @wfmu.bsky.social & the last in a regular slot for a bit! taking a (slight) break after being weekly for 10+ years, hopefully back doing fill-ins soon. (hit me up, DJs!) tune in for 3 hours of new music & jammy intrigues. wfmu.org/playlists/JJ...

The lyrics of Lou Reed’s song Sick of You (from New York, 1989) floated into my mind. Quite an uncanny set of scenarios.

[Verse 4] They ordained the Trumps and then he got the mumps And died being treated at Mt. Sinai And my best friend Bill died from a poison pill Some wired doctor prescribed for stress My arms and legs are shrunk, the food all has lumps They discovered some animal no one's ever seen It was an inside trader eating a rubber tire After running over Rudy Giuliani They say the President's dead, no one can find his head It's been missing now for weeks But no one noticed it, he had seemed so fit I'm sick of it I'm sick of you

The NYC subway system is installing new emergency gates (to exit platforms) that are "delayed egress." There's a 15-second (!) delay to open the gate. This seems nutz to me. The main problem I forsee is people panicking and piling up at the door during a smoke condition, fire, or flooding.

Baudrillard’s 4 stages of simulacra applied to pumpkin spice Stage one (next to picture of pumpkin): Initially the sign (image or representation) is a reflection of basic reality Stage two (next to picture of pumpkin pie): the sign masks a basic reality. The image becomes a distortion of reality Stage three (next to Starbucks pumpkin spice latte): the sign marks the absence of basic reality. The image calls into question what the reality is and if it even exists Stage four (next to jug of pumpkin spice flavored coffee mate): the sign bears no relation to any reality whatsoever; it is it’s own pure simulacrum

Now a bunch of riot cops are here with pepper ball guns and face shields and a dangerously low-flying police helicopter is giving orders to disperse, because police in Los Angeles are unusually wound up at all times

neil did play the unreleased "singer without a song" but nothing from the new album. can't say i was hankering, really, but a block of new songs that neil REALLY wanted everybody to hear feels like it was a guaranteed (even crucial) part of all tours up until lockdown, i think, & i miss it (kinda).

correction, the first "long walk home" since '89, my bad.

temporarily healed by neil young & the chrome hearts at jones beach, GA pit abandoned to post-hurricane high tides & return of venue's old moat. windswept mix in balcony, birds dislodged from stage roof flocking during loud tunes. 1st "long road home" since '86 & "singer not the song" since '13.

also got to experience neil's "greendale" era setup, where he sang into a mic, sent into a rotating megaphone itself miked by several small microphones. underrated neil young analog ridiculousness!

spooner oldham was basically, er, ambient on b3, though floated through in places. still, like, that dude cowrote "i'm your puppet" & "sweet inspiration" & played at muscle shoals (& with neil & everybody else).

my interest in NYA has zero to do with having his catalogue in high res (which i already have) & entirely about access to live streams/recordings, which were absolutely selling points when they started, right up to the introduction of more expensive tiers.

yes, when i "locked in" my pricing in 2017-2018, they were all available & they'd just livestreamed 3-4 shows, implying many more to come. i think it's more they gave up rather than it eating into tickets. those were all at small sold out gigs (& one big one) & they never tried again post lockdown.

i have definitely been known to bring more books than the amount of vacation days, depending on destination & type of book. i'm still almost entirely an analog book reader but the prospect of being able to get ebooks if i run out has soothed me just the tiniest bit.

a lifelong fear really, apparently experienced vicariously by (& inherited from) my parents, which once resulted in me reading religious comics (specifically one about chuck colson finding jesus in the slammer) because it was all we could find when i ran out of books.

still a bit salty that one of the 2 main features i signed up for (timeline concerts) got bumped to a more expensive tier & that the other (live streams of shows) seems to have been abandoned altogether.

Let’s hope the NYT public editor looks into why Times reporters witnessed multiple instances of cash being handed out at the mayor’s events but didn’t write it up til they got beaten on the story by a feisty nonprofit site …. Apologies … We are being told the Times no longer has a public editor.

In July, New York Times reporters witnessed other Adams supporters handing out red envelopes with cash at three separate campaign events: one in Flushing, Queens; another in Manhattan's Chinatown; and a third in Sunset Park in Brooklyn. At those events, Mr. Adams picked up support from leaders of influential Chinese community groups, including several with close ties to the Chinese government. The event, organized by four influential community leaders, buzzed with dozens of fervent backers, proudly wearing shirts adorned with Mr. Adams's face and energetically waving U.S. flags as they chanted and called for his re-election. One of the organizers, Steven Tin, the director of Better Chinatown USA, which hosts the Lunar New Year parades in Manhattan's Chinatown, was seen by The Times holding $50 bills and handing out red envelopes to reporters from Chinese-language news organizations. Five days after the event in Queens, Chinese American community leaders held a rally at Confucius Plaza in Chinatown in Manhattan, where Times reporters again witnessed red envelopes being distributed. Then, on July 27, Times reporters saw more envelopes being passed out at the Sunset Park rally. Robin Mui, the chief executive of the Sing Tao U.S. newspaper, was among the organizers of the Manhattan rally. Mr. Mui made at least one trip, in 2014, to China with Mr. Adams and Ms. Greco.
