President Pigman is definitely gonna suck, but also nobody likes him so it might be easier to do an end-run
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
yeah after two anti-rock albums they decided to show they could rock out as hard as their imitators
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
exactly. Pre-"Out of Time"? "Fall on Me". Post-Bill Berry? "At My Most Beautiful" or "Überlin". Middle period? Oh my. The entire "Automatic for the People" album?
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
And that's before we even get into the issues about energy and water use, and problems with data center placement in areas where they do harm to poor people. The ethical reasons are manifold and only grow worse rather than better with every year these products are available.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
But your response highlights a big problem as well: the tools make it easy to be complicit in theft because they're so widespread and free to use. You claim innocence about not knowing that every use of "AI" steals from a lot of people. That's by design. But it's why you shouldn't use it, at all.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
Training data is one big ethical problem with "AI". That's how it ends up being racist with things like facial identification (because most images online are white people and processing is poor on darker skin). See e.g. www.siam.org/publications...
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org)
o no how can I pick just one do I pick "Fall on Me"? or "Sweetness Follows"? or "Überlin"? or "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"? or "Fretless"? or

You want to split hairs and argue that a system that steals content from the ENTIRE INTERNET is the equivalent to making a collage. Well I have spent a lot of time and energy on this topic, but you didn't want to listen to my arguments so you win. I've deleted and you can block me.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
OK I'm done with all of this sophistry. You're the professor and I'm only a Z-list freelancer who deserves to die in misery. I'll delete all my posts.

"we need police to keep us safe, so more police means we're safer" we're the most policed nation in the world, we spend more on police than entire nations spend on their militaries, and we're not safe! from the cops themselves! how's spending more gonna help?
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
the democratic governor candidate here (who seems very likely to win) is running on "cops are great! we need more cops!" and I am so tired
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
to be clear, I'm not ruling out it being real, I just feel like we need to be *sure*. Especially when we're collectively on Trump Deathwatch, and whatever is going on with Giuliani.

Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
Again, after the "Trump goes up on the roof and talks about nuclear weapons" incident, it wouldn't surprise me to see someone throwing shit out a window, but there are just too many questions for me to accept this video is real without backup evidence.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
the quality of the vid is low enough that it might be that, but the low quality also speaks against it being real
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org)
So here's why I'm concerned: 1. The original source is an anonymous submission to an anonymous clickbait instagram account. Not sure if there's another more legit source. No time stamps, either. 2. Do the White House windows even open like that? If so that's a huge security flaw.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
that building is an extremely secure facility. Maybe the windows open, but I feel like they are more likely sealed? Someone surely knows that answer
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
I'm a bit concerned that it's gone viral without any actual sourcing. Do the White House windows even open like that?
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent
My first question is why this post is the only source for it. I'm not seeing it anywhere else.
Matthew R Francis (@bowlerhatscience.org) reply parent

do we have a source for that "someone is throwing stuff out of the White House window" video yet? Because it's believable (especially after Trump's up on the roof moment earlier) but with no source for it in this year of our lard 2025, we can't trust a damn thing.
