But I do wish she would clean her room, it's disgusting.
My oldest is in 8th and I was a little worried necessary 6th was hard socially and 7th academically. But as an 8th grader it's like she's found her groove. She's very cool and it's great to see.

I think a lot of people who hate kids really hate the way their own lives have turned out and resent that kids still have a chance.
(I have a teen, I know it's not all sunshine. But I'll take it over blunt cynicism anyway)
The level of enthusiasm about everything, the camaraderie, the goofiness. It's a little ray of light sometimes that maybe things will be ok eventually.
People who whine about kids, young or older, mystify me. Yeah, kids can suck, teens can be mean, whatever. But they're literally the future. And a lot of them are great.

There are three high schoolers studying next to me at this coffeeshop and I dunno, I think kids are cool and funny.
Just finished Chinatown for the first time and I haven't felt that upset by an ending in ages. What a film.

Yeah. It sucks to have the course of your entire country set by a vocal minority but it's not that uncommon and you're right, and there are small things you can do to nudge it in the right direction but systemic change isn't a switch you can flip.

My second worst fear, after then retaining power, is that they lose, we get a term of "let's be friends and get normal" then they take power again and we continue this rightward trend forever.
That's exactly what I thought. I knew it would be bad but even in Trump I we got some of that and this time everyone just offered complete fealty from day one.

If you're interested in the morality of it, it's a lot harder to admit that something is still good but you can't imbibe it anymore. And that line is different for everyone but we should be honest about what it is.

Not to put too fine of a point on it but the day before the Gaiman allegations came out, he topped every list of alternatives to problematic art x. Moving on to the next "good artist" is just setting up the same cycle again.
I don't think Neil Gaiman, for example, is a Wagner level artist but it's undeniable that Sandman is one of the most acclaimed and influential comics ever written. And the day before he was exposed people were recommending him as a good artist who creates good art. That's dangerous.
The real problem comes whenever we equate people making art we love with them being good people, which is implicitly reinforced whenever anyone who turns out to be a creep is retroactively treated as though they never created anything anyone with sense could ever like.
I think it's less the objective quality of the art than it is that if you thought something was good today, it doesn't become bad tomorrow no matter what you learn about the creator. It may impact your experience of the art but the work stands as it stands.
The hardest thing for people online to understand is that bad people can make good art. You're doing the devil's work when you declare that every work of art by someone who turned out to be a creep was always bad anyway. That's literally how they victimize people.
