"Rakesfall" by @vajra.me is probably the most recent example. I am clearly not clever enough to keep up with all the wonderful nuances and complexities, but the prose is so glorious I just kept going anyway 😂
Alex Pendragon (@alexp336.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
If the prose has grabbed me, or I'm invested in the characters, I'll usually just push on with the assumption that I'll either come to some understanding later, or that I'll have still got something valuable from my time (even if it's not quite what the author hoped or planned for).

To me, there is a difference between « I don’t understand it but I’m having a great time » and « I don’t understand it and also the book is a slog ». In the first scenario it’s like listening to a banger of a song in a language you don’t speak. I’m cool with just vibing with it.

(Recently saw LA Hall coin the term “futtock-shroudery”, à la Patrick O’Brien’s novels, for the incomprehensible details that make you believe an author knows their stuff even if you don’t)

People make fun of "the wargleblasters were set to nullify and that could only mean one thing: beans." Style, but I'll put up with it if you tell me in the next sentence what that means to the emotional arc of the protagonist. But I won't put up with it if you refuse to tell me why I should care.

trust in the author matters a lot, and I’ll have to think more about how exactly a book establishes that in my brain? I think A Stranger in Olondria had me by about page ten.
Premee Mohamed (@premeemohamed.com) reposted reply parent
Mm, depends on the author for me, I think? Like... if I don't understand, but feel like I can trust them to be doing it on purpose, I just forge ahead till my brain makes the necessary connections. If I feel like they're doing it unintentionally, I'll leave and start a new book.

question: how much does it bother you in a book if you don’t quite understand what’s going on? what measures do you take to remedy this lack of understanding? what novels most rewarded your further investigation?

I have a pretty high tolerance for this IF the world/story is still vivid and interesting, even when I don't have complete context for it.
