GFC as the tipping point for civilisation globally ? not the first time I've seen that thesis mooted; from a financial perspective, am very sure the advent of crypto and its bastard offspring since then is most definitely not progress.
BrokenBanker (@brokenbanker.bsky.social) reply parent
you're right historically; my surprise such as it is relates to current events in aggregate, since it suggests this isn't a society which has made any forward progress except technologically for a long time.

bloody Pixar. Wall-E wasn't an entertaining movie about a lonely robot in space, it was a Disney owned blueprint for the American future under fascism !

is it too much to ask for my fridge to manage all my grocery needs including delivery, and my Tesla robot to then unpack and restock my fridge ? I anticipate the future being fabulous once we've got past the inevitable teething problems:

I mean, you open the fridge, get distracted by a screen and reduce the cooling efficiency of the fridge at the same time ?

BrokenBanker (@brokenbanker.bsky.social) reply parent
the slavish adherence to 'the US constitution as superior' approach has been well debunked already, and am glad to see more US citizens catching on. what's surprised me more so far is the extent of the 'complying in advance to rising fascism' from more of the population than I'd expected.

we're in Okonjima, where there's both natural wild predators (like yesterday's leopard), and some conservancy work with cheetahs and lions too via the Africat Foundation. something like 34 leopards in a 22K square hectare area, so chances to see are higher here than anywhere else in Africa.

so First Amendment Republicans aren't objecting to cancellation of free speech, and Second Amendment Republicans aren't standing up against the arrival of authoritarianism ? most people recognise the 5th amendment, but let's remind ourselves what the 3rd and 4th amendments are before, shall we ?

unless I'm mistaken, these assholes never go away voluntarily, so must always be fought, and never appeased. it could not be more straightforward. nor am I of the view that discourse should remain civil with them at the individual level, but that's a personal choice.
