Hi John — Thanks very much for reaching out. I'm assuming you've used AI to generate the art here, just based on a quick look through the attached PDF — we will not stock AI-generated works of any kind, as currently available AI tools are not only environmentally disastrous but also trained largely off the backs of stolen creative labor. I can't imagine we'll be the only store to respond in this manner, but even if we are, we'll be holding firm to this line. Better luck with your next, hopefully all-human, book.

Me: I'd like to revisit our conversation last month about hiring a new CEO for our startup. We had a candidate who was very tall and had great hair, but some of the board was hesitating because he was a giraffe. You urged us to go ahead with the hire, pointing out the broad popularity of giraffes among people of all ages. Now, a month into his tenure as CEO, the giraffe has failed to make a single executive decision, and instead spends his time in the campus courtyard stripping the trees of leaves. The board is extremely disappointed, and asked me to request an explanation and a formal apology. ChatGPT said: Thank you for the update, though I’m genuinely sorry to hear how things have unfolded. In retrospect, my recommendation to proceed with the hire was based too heavily on superficial traits—charisma, universal appeal, and a commanding physical presence—and not enough on executive competency, decision-making aptitude, or opposable thumbs. While the candidate’s towering stature and enviable hair made a strong initial impression, I failed to adequately account for his species-specific limitations, particularly his lack of business acumen, human language fluency, and capacity for boardroom strategy beyond “find tree, eat leaves.”

It’s not yet 7am, but the train is now so packed that we’re shoulder to shoulder. A padded bag is protectively being held between my feet, like a baby lion cub. Inside, is a 4.56 billion year asteroid fragment.

Yeah. God knows there's worse things being info-fucked right now, but also, this feels like something cooked up by one or two douchebags on Wikipedia that a few more Youtubers then glommed onto in order to have a stupid new shibboleth to impart to their impressionable/ignorant viewers.

My new favorite thing at the coast: Letting Google attempt to translate the beach plants into English.

A sunny day at Manhattan Beach State Park, OR. Superimposed on the photo are Google's valiant attempts at translating the beach plants into English. sunny day at Manhattan Beach State Park, OR. Superimposed on the photo are Google's valiant attempts at translating the beach plants into English.

A tombstone in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, photographed by Andy Darby. Note the border inscription.

Gravestone inscribed: Alistair Stephen Fabian Mitchell. 13-6-1957, 10-2-2019. Barrister of the Middle Temple. My brain, socialist. My heart, anarchist. My eyes, pacifist. My blood, revolutionary. Around the edge, the legend: The only man in British legal history to be convicted of biting a policeman with someone else’s teeth.

This is the Casablanca you're referring to, right?

Today was a very good day at the convention, although I made some people pretty upset when I said that trying to get kids excited about the NES launch today is like trying to get kids at the NES launch excited about Casablanca

Needs emergency repairs after most winters. Doomed to eventually end as debris at the bottom of an 800' cliff someday. Absolutely nothing about it pencils out in Excel or makes any logical sense. But if you want to make a vast horde of lifelong enemies, just propose tearing it down.

The Vista House is our new economy, turns out. Authorized as a highway restroom building with a view & a gift shop, got delusions of grandeur. Cost 10x the projected amount to build, and has lost money every day it's been open for over a century now...

Would 100% watch a sitcom in which Cuomo and Dershowitz end up roommates, Dershowitz is denied a pierogi every episode in exactly the same way, and Cuomo runs for successively lower-stakes office each week, only to lose again.
