I really want to see the legal rationale/justification for blowing up some randos on a boat in the Caribbean. While I know the USA (sadly) has a long history of doing similar things, it doesn't make it right. We cease to even have ideals when we no longer question living up to them.

Coming back a bit to Hayek he responded to Mydral with the computational black box but it doesn’t work. The computer always has a user.
Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social) reply parent
@alexwilliams.bsky.social and @dsquareddigest.bsky.social are both getting at this with the cybernetics and signal processing metaphor but mine is a forecast always assumes an underlying distribution and when we’re shifting from one underlying model TS forecasting is useless.
Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social) reply parent
That was how Mydral absolutely bodied that entire research paradigm. It also kind of puts away the market failure positions because it’s not that the computer is broken. It’s just being asked to run a model by the user that isn’t appropriate and presenting unstable results.
Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social) reply parent
This has deep implications for how we talk about lots of economic theory because it turns out that Hayek’s project of finding a movement of capital stock over time that is consistent with Wicksellian monetary theory can only be determined as an optimal path ex post rather than ex ante.
Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m using this example because I once used a Bai Perron algo to try to fit breaks to a TS with very few data points and I could never get a stable result. Turns out that the algo can’t solve without a certain threshold of data points because of the samples you take for A B testing.
Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social)
Playing with a shower idea of a way to explain the implications. If we accept the market as big computer metaphor, the computer is quite good at running say a regression model and defining the best fit. What it is not great at is identifying a structural break in a series with very little data.

Yakov Feygin (@buddyyakov.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not sure that would work since you have to send federal taxes to the IRS and theoretically they go into the TGA at the Fed. I think that there was a custodian bank program there to make sure a huge TGA didn’t screw up the Fed balance sheet but I’m not really sure of its status.
