I don't think so, but maybe they remember the shape of my car or the fact that I don't get out of my car. Do I wish they loved me as much as l love them? Sure, but I will accept any kind of interaction. It's what makes burrowing owls so special to me.

I really think it's these particular parents that gave their kids permission! Last year, they had their clutch really late in the season and one of the kids would always come running up to my car when he saw me. I had a great time with the family last year, but nothing like this year.

A side view of a toad facing directly at the camera. The toad is large and robust - the sides of the body stick out on either side of the head, and from this viewpoint, the body is shaped like a bagel seen from the side. The toad's ground color is a light tan, and there are some dark brown blotches and spots on the body. The head has a series of hard tissue ridges, above the eyes, and above the nostrils, dropping down to the upper jaw. These ridges are peppered with dark brown spots. The irises are a golden yellow, shot through with black reticulations, and the dark pupils are horizontally elliptical. The front legs are elephantine in appearance, but look small for the overall size of the toad.

I would add that the way the criminal justice and dependency systems try to coerce victims of domestic violence into cooperating by taking away their children is the most disgusting thing ever. I hate it.

This burrow is the first time this has happened to me, after photographing burrowing owls since 2015. It could only happen with the right combination of relaxed parents and curious kids. It will probably never happen again, so I treasure every moment.

Three burrowing owls standing together. The one on the left has his eyes half-closed, the one in the middle is tilting his head and the one on the right is panting in the heat.

So, I now have so much of this video, I'll never get thru it all. Maybe Carlos can inspire me? #birds alt text: A hummingbird is feeding at a feeder. It's wings are illuminated by the sun causing them to act as tiny prisms creating rainbows. The effect changes as the bird moves.

Between 1 to 3 inches of rain at the core fell between Ocotillo Wells and Fish Creek during a large thunderstorm on 8-25-25. This precipitation contributed to the flash flooding that closed down highway 86 near Desert Elmore Ranch. Thanks to @weatherechowx for the radar info.
