At this instant 80 years ago (8:15am August 6, local time), Little Boy—a 15-kiloton, uranium-fueled atomic bomb—destroyed Hiroshima, killing (per US military estimates) ~70,000 men, women, and children, including 12 American POWs. Independent estimates later maintained ~140,000 people were killed.

A color photograph of a damaged wristwatch on display in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, its hands frozen at 8:15am. A photograph of a shadow of a person living in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, who was vaporized as they climbed the steps of the Sumitomo Bank building while using a cane, leaving behind only their shadow imprinted on the steps (because their body and cane momentarily blocked the light from the intense thermal flash, burning away everything on the steps that was not in shadow). A color photograph of a damaged and partially melted child’s tricycle on display in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. On the morning of August 6, 1945, Shinichi Tetsutani, who was one month shy of turning four years old, was riding this tricycle, playing with his best friend, a girl named Kimi, 1,500 meters away from where the Little Boy atomic bomb exploded overhead. When found in the wreckage of his house, he was still grasping the red handlebar grip from his tricycle. Severely injured and burned all over his body, calling out, “Water, I want water,” he died that night. Shinichi’s father buried him in the backyard with his favorite toy, and his best friend Kimi, so he could ride it and play even after death. Forty years later, in 1985, Shinichi’s father, Nobuo, decided to rebury his son in the family’s gravesite. Unearthing the backyard grave with Kimi’s mother, Nobuo rediscovered the tricycle and donated it to the museum. A black and white photograph of one of the victims of the Little Boy atomic bomb lying on a tatami mat on the floor. It is unclear whether the victim is a man or a woman because most of the skin on the face has been horribly burned and melted, as have the eyes. The victim's right hand and arm appears undamaged (or maybe just lightly burned). The left arm is laying on the mat and is not visible.

Finally, we're going bigger and more ambitious than ever with online and print packages. This week's "Beyond Wellness" edition is a tour-de-force, covering everything from Trump's war on cancer research to the future of brain-computer interfaces. A week's worth of reading, all in one place.

WIRED also kills it with ambitious narrative storytelling. Pieces you can lean back and spend time with (in the mag, on your phone, wherever)! Take, for example, Evan Ratliff’s dive into the world’s first AI-inflected death cult, the Zizians, and their staggering cross-country murder spree.

We are, of course, very good at having fun—and at showing people how stuff works. Take the BTS story of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl show, from concept to construction to lighting and choreography. One of our top-performing stories and videos of 2025—and great counterprogramming to the dystopia.

Our DOGE coverage was unparalleled. For months, WIRED broke news on the beat multiple times a day, lapping our competitors and publishing revelation after revelation about DOGE’s exploits. My personal favorite? Introducing readers to “Big Balls” and his various shenanigans:

Direct File exists. We already paid for it. So we are now trashing software that we have already paid for, that people are using, that people *love*, in the name of "efficiency." Yes, blame the Trump administration for this, but Intuit has been desperate to murder Direct File for years.
