I have just figured out something about a trope or repeating plot point and a lot of of these Chinese shorts. A lot of the men are 30 year-old virgins. They are very rich and are almost always obsessed with a girl from their past who saved their lives and are saving themselves for them.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like I’m about to enter intellectual territory that has already been mapped. I’m wondering who has written about disability representation and soap operas? I need to go do some research… but I’m probably just going to watch another film instead!
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I continue to enjoy the warehouse model aesthetics of these shorts that are all obviously being filmed in similar locations with a similar body of actors wearing similar costumes. this was also a law drama so I got to see a fun Chinese “courtroom”. Better than the hospital!
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
Love Beyond Boundaries was interesting because it gender flipped the problematic propaganda of encouraging age disparate relationships. I’m not against them but these films have an agenda and it’s creepy. They are almost exclusively older men with young women and that’s treated as an ideal.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
These Chinese soap operas are not showing a lot of skin with the plots and illusions are deeply kinky. On more than one occasion I have decoded some of the imagery and had to throw my phone down in shock and getting the ick. But then I watch another one cause I wanna write an essay about this
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
She’s feeling sorry for herself after the doctors diagnosis and drinks too much, she’s a beautiful young man weeping and propositions him. She immediately runs away from him because what she just did was outrageous and goes to check into a hotel, but he follows her there…
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
Our main female disabled protagonist hooks up with a teenager! He’s 19 everyone so it’s totally legal. Also she’s 29… And they are both virgins. These films are set in a strangely conservative chaste society where good folks generally don’t do it out of wedlock.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social)
I cannot stop watching these Chinese soap operas. Their problematic on multiple levels but I’m fascinated by what they are. They remind me of the American soap operas I grew up with. This show “love beyond boundaries” features a female disabled protagonist who Spoiler Alert cures herself with love.

In this morning’s EarlyWords.io liberation meditation I read an excerpt from on Walden Pond from Henry David Thoreau and I was not inspired. Except for one line— “let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine”

Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
These choices are all about saving money. And for some reason, I enjoy the cheesy clunky aesthetics of their cost saving choices.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I say terrible Chinese soap operas because it’s a bad interface, and it’s full of some terrible ideas and I found some content that seemed to be American on the platform as well. So this is not any type of commentary on China – in fact there are some cultural specificity that I love in the videos.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I like —that every video has the same music playing as the soundtrack. That the narrative choices are broad. The repetitive extra sound effects to indicate mood or emotion. The heightened reality moments. Good actors you see in a variety of roles. that every video is the same but different
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
Possibly it’s grooming or indoctrination narrative forms created to give people a taste for abusive situations and give them the idea that they should romanticize it. Earlier today I watched a video where the guy didn’t know the girl hadn’t hurt him and he really loved her so she forgave him-yuck
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
Is the audience for this women? I don’t think it’s a pleasant fantasy for women but it is maybe one if you are actively being abused… And inside a repressive hetero sexist patriarchal culture possibly this is offered as a fantasy for those with limited expectations.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
In this last one I enjoyed that a chronic illness flare was a moment that saved the emperor from some court drama getting drugged by a Corazza that wanted to rape him with drugs. This is also a frequent plot point in a lot of of these videos!
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
Sometimes I get a hyper fixation where I feel like I need to understand some piece of digital landscape or media content fully and in so doing I figure out that it’s dangerous and awful. But I find it difficult to stop watching it but I don’t think there’s more to learn.
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
In where the last love resides we got to witness a woman being tortured by a dude and a bunch of women in an imperial court in feudal China. This is a similar plot point to almost every video I have seen on this app. I’m trying to figure out who the audience for this is supposed to be
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I just watched where the Last Love Resides in 69 three minute installments. Looking away from the screen and being forced to look back to click tiny buttons in advertisements that feel designed to trick me and accidentally activating something into my phone. It’s almost like a video game avoiding it
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if it’s because I came up on media that was sometimes a very small screen and I’m yearning for that experience as I read subtitles on my cell phone. The interface is concerning and I think it might be filling my phone with spyware. And yet I keep scrolling
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social)
I can’t stop watching these terrible Chinese soap operas. I say they’re terrible because the content is disturbing and I think it’s being offered to me like it should be positive? And yet I find the interface addictive. I’m sure it was designed to be that way
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
We talked about how categories of excellence under supremacy culture are produced by creating categories of exclusion. We talked about segregation in sports and how folks will act like a marginalized person stole what they have because it’s supposed to belong to someone with more power.

Supremacy culture mythology are that white men have a track record of running things well, billionaires are necessary, marginalized classes are not the source of everything valuable in our culture. The stories and mythology make it hard for us to do better for ourselves as an entire society
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social) reply parent
What is a ridiculous story that has been forced on you by the ruling class? What storage did they tell to make you buy something, or sell yourself out?
Claudia Alick (@callingupjustice.bsky.social)
Supremacy culture depends on mythologies. This nation runs on stories and is believing in them. The media repeats these stories and regular people manufacture consent style repeat them like it’s common sense and not ridiculous storytelling forced on us by the ruling class.
