"Destroying" sure is a choice of words. Even though I know what's being said, still.

I think the one thing that I'm willing to give this whole thing credit for is that it's aware that it's for straight dudes.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess that the rest of us have to learn how to do all this shit, and it feels weird to labels this the way it is. It's not women, it's sluts, and you're not learning how to flirt, you're watching an exhibit at the sex zoo and getting slut feedback. Maybe it's me.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
I know she's gearing this for straight men, and I'm not the target audience, so I'm trying to not be TOO judgey but this sounds WAY too aggressively cis-het. Which ... I dunno. I've said my piece to some other friends cause it starts to get weird.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
yeah!! I've had some that stretch across the bed, too. There's a wide variety and I'm seeing some weird plastic thing you put on the end of the bed? I'm not sure how those work

Try fitted sheet clips (There's a wide variety. most of them are some sort of bungie attached to a clip so it makes putting on and taking off the fitted sheet a pain, but it does lock them into place)

I mean, there's no visual way to have Jean Valjean duck into an abbey and you get an entire Ken Burns documentary on the building spliced into an already 4 hour mini series.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
My personal variation on this is Les Miserables, where the character family trees are both simpler and complex than, say the musical, including cutting characters, and there's also major chapters that get cut because of reasons. Some very valid reasons depending on who you ask.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social)
I really like this, especially when we talk about "does watching the movie/mini series/audio drama *count* as having read the book?" There are books that a visual adaptation isn't going to get the same feel and yes, you can *usually*understand the story, especially as it relates to the zeitgeist+

Meanwhile, here in NYC, multiple people in my neighborhood are loud and visible MAGA types and it gets worse when you go out to Long Island. Red vs Blue, especially in terms of state resident accomplishments doesn't really say anything since it's often just confirming priors.
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
Houston regularly elects a D mayor and has a world class ballet, opera, theater, and symphony, despite the fact that it's in a red state and is never listed as the Good Blue Area. The Houston Medical Center is world renowned for it's research and care.+

Being more into the historical side than the romance, my first thought (after Austen) was clothes, especially for anyone wanting to do a ball or cultural recreation thing. Once crinolines get involved, everyone's like Donna from 90210 at the prom.

How many of the towns have roots in Native populations that died out before? (Again, sorry! I'm a bit one note today but I'm kinda thinking of how this would either mean the Pilgrims have to make do with the shittiest areas or if they'd have to do more to assimilate)
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
(apologies if I'm harping on disease a lot in this thread. It's just that that did a LOT of the work that colonial powers would try to finish)
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
I think without disease destroying the Native population, we get more Roanokes at best and Jamestowns at worst, with the added caveat of it makes Plymouth Rock a lot harder as the people who cultivated it are still there. Thus forcing a "play nice or go away" attitude that's better enforced
Carriage Return (@carriagereturn.bsky.social) reply parent
The other thing going on with this comparison is that disease did a shit ton of work BEFORE the Mayflower arrived and there's a reason why North America has two large white population countries as opposed to say, India.

About five years after Hamilton hit big, I was visiting Trinity Church and there was at least one teen fanning over his grave, including telling their parents information that wasn't in the musical. I've always felt it as part of a way to bring people who are usually excluded from stuff like 1776+
