Ok, Mr. Barton. That’s it. Straw man arguments are annoying … and ineffective. Goodnight
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve uploaded lots of things, including YouTube videos. But I don’t caption them: “YouTube Video by Catherine E. Cullen.” Because if I did, it would be misleading— deceptive, actually.
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Then why does it read: YouTube Video by Greg Barton?

I know this sounds crazy, but shouldn’t the Secretary of Energy know something about energy?
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Mr. Barton, you’re really interesting. You disagree with something I said. You respond with something you apparently see as quite different, but which is really nearly identical to an idea I posted. So, I then agree with you… Whereupon you tell me it’s a dreadful idea, WHEN IT WAS YOUR BLOODY IDEA.
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Then why did you make a video extolling the virtues of natural gas in combination with renewable resources?
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
I watched your video. It’s clever. Well done. High production values. Quite lovely. Financed by a sponsor (Shell) in the natural gas business. Natural gas is also a fossil fuel— albeit a significantly cleaner one than coal or petroleum. So, therefore, better than those. Why are you arguing with me?
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
You seem to be saying that I shouldn’t favor renewable energy, because it’s unreliable, while at the same time, saying it’s bad to have a fossil fuel backup because you think that means I want to keep fossil fuel around in perpetuity…. Which is not at all what I said. What solution do you propose?

Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t quite grasp how countries having available fossil fuel as backup diminishes the value of the fact that they get the majority of their electricity from renewable sources. And if France’s neighbors have a bigger carbon footprint, how does that diminish the value of France’s smaller one?

The largest SNAP cuts in history went into effect yesterday, eliminating or drastically cutting food assistance for millions of Americans. And it’s all to pay for more tax cuts that primarily benefit the super-rich. Trickle-down economics isn't just a hoax — it's cruel.
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Mr. Barton, I think you’ve decided “renewable energy resources = unreliable & bad.” Never mind that 5 European countries get 75% or more of their electricity from renewable sources, or that several more get at least 50%. In your mind, you’re right. Period. (But they still get their energy that way.)
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Which is how we got into the discussion to start with! The poster said “a country can’t run all winter on just batteries.” I replied that it doesn’t have to! Every day might not be windy or sunny, but some are. Every river doesn’t generate hydroelectric power, but some do.
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Norway, Albania, Denmark & Portugal generate all or nearly all their electricity from renewable sources. Sweden and Finland, 66% and 50% respectively. They’re not “dark” on calm, cloudy & less than sunny days.
Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Then how does Norway generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources? Think! Not every day is windy. Not every day is sunny. Hydroelectric power isn’t generated by EVERY river… But many days are sunny, many days are windy, & many rivers can generate hydroelectric power.

Catherine E. Cullen (@catherineecullen.bsky.social) reply parent
Happily, batteries don’t have to. Sun sometimes shines & wind often blows, even in winter. Nuclear power also exists. Nobody expects to “run an entire country on battery power” during winter. Several “cold winter” nations- already generate 100% of their electricity from renewable sources.
