#SciArtSeptember 1: Islet Somewhere in the waves of Barents Sea, a rocky islet acts as a perch for seabirds. Puffins, guillemots, razorbills and skuas are still here, though threatened by heating oceans and spreading disease. With them sits a lonely ghost of a great auk that once roamed these seas.

A simple landscape illustration with a grey-green ocean, a dark grey rocky islet partly covered by orange lichen and a light grey overcast sky. On and around the islet are seabirds of several species, most pictured realistically in colour. The largest bird is a now-extinct great auk, depicted as a semi-translucent white ghost figure.

Today starts the 30-day countdown to the #ChoicesAnthology release! Every day I'll share something about Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror, the collective scream of authors whose reproductive rights are under threat, starting w. the blurb! Preorder it today at books2read.com/u/3JYo9Q

Red paint background with the cover for Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror on the left. The cover lists the editor, Dianna Gunn, the author of the foreward, Alex Woodroe, and the names of the authors: R Haven, Ondine Mayor, Enoli Lee, Ash Vale, Justine White, Kelli Etheridge, Ava Victoria Black, Allay Rei, Soyam Siddha, Sam Rosewilde, A.H. Davison, Meg Calendaria, KT Wagner, Anne Wilkins, Bogi Takacs, Amanda Cecelia Lang, Elise Scott, Mia Dalia, Raluca Balasa. The right side says: “As the horrors close in around us, we turn to story to process our fears, our desires, and our futures. In Choices: An Anthology of Reproductive Horror, nineteen writers whose reproductive rights are under threat explore the stories of those who, like them, have had their choices stolen from them: The horror of being forced to carry a child you don’t want. The catharsis of taking revenge on a man who stole your right to choose. The terror of being threatened by the world for having a baby you do want because you’re “the wrong gender”. These stories serve as a reminder of the power of choice and the importance of fighting for every human’s right to choose their own future.”

My father was born in the 1940s and lost two childhood friends to disease before vaccines were invented to prevent them. He never recovered from the trauma of it.

Lest you say "it's not like that in the United States," I am currently representing a person facing criminal charges for - and this is true - saying "protect trans kids" during a school board meeting

I’m glad you were able to get there in the end! It’s sure unfair that you had to go through all that in order to do so though.

Moving on from theropods, we now look at the pterosaurs of the Kem Kem, beginning with the azhdarchoid (?) Alanqa! Some thoughts and size comparison below ⬇️ #sciart #paleoart

Like, it actually takes effort to do that to kids, and it always has.

I took Honors Biology in 1992-93 and we learned about people having multiple X and Y chromosomes (XXY and XYY) and intersex people. It really stuck out to me then how gender is a construct because a lot of these peope don't even know and will never know about the extra chromosomes.

The first trans character I ever saw was on Night Court. The first time I saw neopronouns in use was on LambdaMOO in 1994. Conservatives not paying attention to the world around themselves is a skill issue.

Jury nullification is a decision by a jury to return a verdict of not guilty even though the defendant has broken the law, stemming from the belief that the law is unjust, that the prosecutor has misapplied it, that the punishment is too harsh, or from general frustration with the legal system.

That makes a lot of sense--particularly when you see how many agents are repping it these days! Thanks. :)

I've had two rejections where the agent said or implied that my SF heist with romance subplot could be a difficult sell in 2025 while it might not have been a few years ago. Is an NB narrator, female love interest, and mostly queer characters really that controversial even in this political climate?

gen ai really is ruining everything :(

I'm so sick of 80% of the recipes I see online being AI generated. I'm so sick of having to use detective work on a recipe site to figure out if it's AI generated. I'm so sick of getting really excited to make a recipe just to figure out it's AI generated. Honestly I'm just going to stick to recipe books and using bakers I know and trust. I don't care if the recipe is perfectly fine, just AI generated. It's deeply worrying to me and I'm scared and frustrated about the future of online recipe websites.

Healthcare availability and cost. That's the one thing nearly every American agrees on in principle, and the single easiest way to win someone over. "We need more rural hospitals." "Healthcare is too expensive." Someone argues against that, they sound like an asshole.
