The events also really stand out. It’s not just the dishes. It’s the social effect. Our synagogue holiday parties were packed because the food was so good.
The day of the wedding, I had to be down in the kitchens at the venue in the morning, then race back to the house, put on a suit, marry them, and then change back, go back to the venue, and get everything finished and ready before 150 people showed up. 😂
I also officiated weddings for two former students and a friend. In one case, I officiated and catered, which was logistically tricky.
This is just fantastic. What a memory explosion.
I’ve thought about it. I like the idea of something that is both artistic — whose value normally is instrumental — but also an essential, basic necessity of life. I think it may be unique in that regard
It was my main form of “charity.” I did it for congregants and friends and even students who couldn’t afford a caterer.
I’ve actually catered people’s weddings and Bar Mitzvahs and stuff. For two years, I cooked all the holiday meals for our synagogue in Springfield, MO, which sometimes meant over 200 people.

I honestly don't think we needed tech much beyond what we had in the late 80s early 90s; certainly not in the personal/household sphere. It's been mostly destructive past that point.

My daughter graduated in 2020, so she was spared the absolute worst of it, but it was already quite bad. I graduated in 1986 and the difference is so catastrophic that you'd think we grew up on different planets.

The question is: whom are you hurting by cheating? And the answer is “you.” It doesn’t hurt the admin that you’ve developed no real skills.
Definitions by nature are exclusionary. This is why for many (perhaps, most) terms, the best one can offer is an analysis in terms of family resemblances.
I agree it’s a disaster. But the solution isn’t to lean into it. I retired from teaching before the AI really hit, but cheating was already rampant, via Wikipedia, online encyclopedias, etc.
Who cares who’s to blame? It’s the damage wrought that matters.

I suspect most of them aren’t bothered by what the average person thinks is immoral or sleazy. Imperatives lacking force are only significant when directed against a person with a conscience, and in an environment where conscience holds sway. That is not the current situation.
Zverev is one of the worst highly ranked players we’ve seen. Indeed, I’ll be glad when that entire cohort has moved on. The next generation is far more talented…and much more appealing, personality-wise.

My wife hates cooking, which made me immediately appealing as a spouse. In a second life, I'd be a chef. My daughter benefitted enormously from my cooking all of her meals growing up. Not only health wise, but in terms of developing a mature palate. Other kids were eating fries and chick nuggets.
That's a shame. It's one of the great joys in my life. There is nothing else that is simultaneously an artistic endeavor and also crucial to one's basic material well being. In that respect, it is unique.

I think people overestimate how difficult it is to sauté a few ingredients in olive oil and toss it with pasta. Liking it is a different matter of course, but people generally would be a lot healthier if they cooked most of their own meals from scratch.
