Circling back around to my first point, there's a big difference between not having enough support to actively becoming a target of a witch hunt. And it sucks that I'm nostalgic for a time that still sucked but still felt survivable.
If my employer or health care provider get targeted by the DoJ, I'm screwed. Compliance to perceived risks homophobia and transphobia has done as more to harm queer communities than the text of the laws.
There's a lot of wank about allies as stakeholders in this fight, but I survived Reagan/Bush. I remember allies being destroyed for openly providing HIV care, recognizing partnerships, and not engaging in obligatory and performative homophobia for social credibility.
"Gr**mer" not only means trans people, but cis people who tolerate trans people.
It's no surprise to me that allies are often as much of a target as trans people. With teachers, health care providers, librarians, publishers, and creatives attacked, censured, held liable, and criminalized for treating trans people as people.
That dystopia feels closer and even more scary.
Often that's *still* discrimination and not enough. The observation of Charlie Jane Anders story "don't press charges and I won't sue" comes to mind. People who might, in private, disagree willing to keep at least some peace because it doesn't cost them anything. (But I might be missing the point.)
Something I've been thinking about the last few days is about how trans people are loosing what we had two years ago. Which was often not formal and not spelled out in law, but a cis plurality willing to make some accommodations and compromises.

"Pregnant people" may not be much in use, but should be! It's defensible! Trans men and nonbinary people exist, they are not women, and they need medical care that respects their identities. (Pregnant people also points to the radical idea that even women who have had sex are still human beings.)
