Whip it good! Whiplash Squids (family Mastigoteuthidae) are a family of squids with very long tentacles, giving them a very silly look. These tentacles can be retracted into special sheaths, which are actually two of their arms. #SQUIDtember

Nautiluses, the other group of surviving cephalopods, could not be more different from their coleoid cousins. They have their iconic external shells, but they also have 50+ cirri instead of 8-10 limbs and pinhole eyes. They also can live over 20 years, much longer than any other cephalopod.

A Blue-lined Octopus's (Hapalochlaena fasciata) is able to kill a human with a bite, but they also use their bite to practice safe sex. The male will bite the larger female, injecting venom into her aorta and paralyzing her. This allows the male to mate without the risk of being eaten by the female

The most famous hunting behaviour for cuttlefish is the Broadclub Cuttlefish's (Ascarosepion latimanus) "passing-stripe" display. The cuttlefish will extend its arms and create a pattern of downward moving stripes, which confuses prey long enough for the cuttlefish to strike. 🦑📽️Julian Finn
