Whip it good! Whiplash Squids (family Mastigoteuthidae) are a family of squids with very long tentacles, giving them a very silly look. These tentacles can be retracted into special sheaths, which are actually two of their arms. #SQUIDtember

A close up of a whiplash squid (family Mastigoteuthidae) floating a bit above the sea floor. Most of its limbs are together, with two of them spreading far out, forming a wishbone shape. The limb are on an angle compared to the rest of its body. The squid is a deep red. A whiplash squid (family Mastigoteuthidae) floating near the sea floor, surrounded by marine snow. The squid's tentacles are extended, and all its arms are pointing down. The squid has a deep red colour, except for the ends of the tentacles which are a slightly red white. Nautiluses, the other group of surviving cephalopods, could not be more different from their coleoid cousins. They have their iconic external shells, but they also have 50+ cirri instead of 8-10 limbs and pinhole eyes. They also can live over 20 years, much longer than any other cephalopod.

Two Palau Nautiluses (Nautilus belauensi) floating in the ocean, face to face. They both have white spiral shells with brown stripes, a triangle shaped hood above its head that has a brown area with white spots, and many small appendages called cirri. Their eyes are simple pinhole type eye that a small circular opening with a vertical slit below it. Chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) (left) swimming next to a Fuzzy nautilus (Allonautilus scrobiculatus) (right). The fuzzy nautilus looks very similar to the chambered nautilus, except the hood is smaller and curved downward, and its shell is mostly covered in a yellow fuzz called a periostracum. A Blue-lined Octopus's (Hapalochlaena fasciata) is able to kill a human with a bite, but they also use their bite to practice safe sex. The male will bite the larger female, injecting venom into her aorta and paralyzing her. This allows the male to mate without the risk of being eaten by the female

Since I took so many photos and I will literally go crazy if I try to edit them all at once, I decided I will edit them just as I go and then share them once a day. Plus this fits with #invertefest! Here is todays little guy, the Acorn Weevil (Curculio glandium)! I adore this banger of snoot!

A photograph of an adult Acorn Weevil (Curculio glandium). It is a weevil approximately seven millemeters long excluding the nose, which by itself is as long as the body and resembles a long black straw. The nose also has two antennae coming off of it, which come up at a forty five degree angle and then bend again at another forty five degrees to point forward, resembling a very skinny and long pair of bulls horns. The weevils body itself resembles a long acorn, being a slightly mottled brown and darker on the head. It has two very round eyes at the front and its head is covered in very small brown hairs. It has six legs that give it a pretty high center of gravity for it's size. The front two pairs are closer together, facing forward, while the back pair support the rear of the creature and have more of a squat. The upper section of the legs are thicker near what you would consider the knees. The Acorn Weevil has almost comically large feet. In this particular photograph the Acorn Beetle is standing on top of a white sheet and is next to a smaller insect. A photograph of an adult Acorn Weevil (Curculio glandium). Heldig er den som får se SVÆRE TROLLKRABBER på havbunnsvideoen sin. Men hva i helsike? #invertefest (alt text in English)

Screenshot from ROV video: Gravelly seabed with coral rubble at 90 m water depth in Trondheimsfjorden, mid-Norway. A huge Norway king crab (Lithodes maja, i.e. not the invasive Kamchatka crab) faces the camera while gripping a much smaller king crab firmly by its legs with both claws. Two laser dots visible above the bigger crab are spaced 10 cm apart, indicating that the bigger crab has a ca. 14 cm wide carapace and a legspan of maybe 60 cm, while the smaller crab has a carapace size of ca. 8-9 cm. The tentacles of an orange anemone are visible in the lower right corner. ROV video clip in next post shows the big crab maneuvering across the coral rubble and over the anemone while carrying the smaller crab off to somewhere.

What lovely tentacles you have! The upper tentacles of snails house the eyes, but even more important is the lower pair. The tentacles closet to the ground are their sniffers, picking up olfactory cues. #InvertFest

A man proposing to his boyfriend, except instead of a ring in a box, they are holding a Coconut Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) hiding in a bivalve shell. The octopus is beige and brown, and the shell is mostly open and biege. Its arms are tucked together and it has its papillae raised, including above its eyes. It is night time, and there is a glass building or greenhouse out of focus in the background. The man on the right is kneeling, and has a brown scarf and a light blue coat. The man of the left is standing, smiling and covering their mouth, and is wearing a beige coat.
