It’s a logical postulate, but the Organian Peace Treaty somewhat undermines it. It’s one of those things that works thematically, and works well, but doesn’t quite track for plot logic.

I’m a fan too. It’s not just the sequence itself, but the impact on our overall suspension of disbelief. Time travel has to feel extraordinary in some way or we would just make it a pedestrian technology like the transporter. It is — and should be— as close as Trek comes to magic.

I wonder a lot about the 32nd century thing. The nature of Star Trek is meant to be open-ended, with a future of limitless possibilities. It was probably a mistake to fix a future where the Federation will be wiped out and have to rebuild. Feels deterministic now. #TrekBookClub

Me too. Surprised and somewhat appalled. I’m a big Verhoeven guy, love Robocop and can appreciate the insanity of Total Recall, but Troopers is not a good adaptation of the fine source material.

It was clear to the Baldwin survivors that Pike and crew were honest people who were hiding something. The truth fractured their relationship, but also set the stage for rebuilding it on a solid base. I enjoyed the arc of the two groups. #TrekBookClub

The Prime Directive is, I think, interpreted too strictly by some fans. Any technological civilization is exempt from it even if they don’t have all our same technology. But if time travel were real, the temporal prime directive would probably be super strict and Pike would be court-martialed 1/2
