So we just watched arguably the best TOS episode followed by arguably the only good TAS episode. Quite a night! Thanks to @tossatnight.bsky.social and everyone who participates. #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
Actually, the LeMatyaâs already got to I-Chayaâs remains⊠#TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
That is an absolutely classic TAS anecdote.

I-Chaya is fighting Battlecat! #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
Thatâs awesome!
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
Young Spock sounds just like Linus from a Charlie Brown special. #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
If you pass the survival test, you get to wear something more than just a speedo. Itâs really important. #TOSSatNight

Itâs too big to be a space station!

I noticed that. Insult me with proper pronunciation, please. #TOSSatNight

How did they get the worst possible imitation of the Guardianâs voice? #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
Youâre not supposed to goof around with the Guardian of Forever, thatâs whatâs wrong, Kirk. #TOSSatNight

I even went for a jog on Christopher Plummer Drive. Good times.

I donât think McCoy had time to get to her anyway. #TOSSatNight

TOS friends, I believe that I, too, am in love with Edith Keeler. #TOSSatNight

Well, he got the heater, but his problem was he didnât get any troops to show him how to use it. #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
What works about the ending is that Spock raises the possibility halfway through. Kirk has had time to think long and hard about his moral dilemma. His action at the moment of truth is not reflex, but his innermost self. #TOSSatNight
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social)
Kirk intentionally unbuttoned the top of his shirt because he thought Edith might come down looking for the tools. #TOSSatNight

CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
Itâs a logical postulate, but the Organian Peace Treaty somewhat undermines it. Itâs one of those things that works thematically, and works well, but doesnât quite track for plot logic.

Iâm a fan too. Itâs not just the sequence itself, but the impact on our overall suspension of disbelief. Time travel has to feel extraordinary in some way or we would just make it a pedestrian technology like the transporter. It is â and should beâ as close as Trek comes to magic.

Luciana joined Starfleet as a way of running away from an unhappy home. Well, she is now as far away from that home as she can get. Maybe she can turn her attention to actually becoming the kind of officer who inspired Erica to join the service herself. #TrekBookClub
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder a lot about the 32nd century thing. The nature of Star Trek is meant to be open-ended, with a future of limitless possibilities. It was probably a mistake to fix a future where the Federation will be wiped out and have to rebuild. Feels deterministic now. #TrekBookClub
CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
Me too. Surprised and somewhat appalled. Iâm a big Verhoeven guy, love Robocop and can appreciate the insanity of Total Recall, but Troopers is not a good adaptation of the fine source material.

CetiAlphaNeil (@cetialphaneil.bsky.social) reply parent
It was clear to the Baldwin survivors that Pike and crew were honest people who were hiding something. The truth fractured their relationship, but also set the stage for rebuilding it on a solid base. I enjoyed the arc of the two groups. #TrekBookClub

The Prime Directive is, I think, interpreted too strictly by some fans. Any technological civilization is exempt from it even if they donât have all our same technology. But if time travel were real, the temporal prime directive would probably be super strict and Pike would be court-martialed 1/2
