Please join us on Wednesday 10th September for the launch of Daughter of the Otherworld at 6.30pm. Shauna and her friends had an afternoon with us last autumn that was pure magic. Myth & history & fiction - I am very excited!

Had no idea of the pettiness he was capable of - quite brilliant! Poor astrologer John Partridge - Swift published a fake prophecy predicting his death & followed it with a mock obituary. Partridge protested, & Swift replied that of course Partridge was dead, no living man could write so poorly.

I’ve lost sets in moves too … I always yearn for them, even though I still don’t have the space for the books I have, let alone the ones I’ve parted with! I’m always amazed at what a perennial favourite the Dune books are - very established in Cult Fiction.

I was told off in store on Saturday by a customer because I haven’t been putting up enough actual books, especially from Secondhand (as he doesn’t always know what might interest him until he sees it!) Seems fair, so here goes!! Trollies going out to the floor!

I always smile when people tell me how they dream of working in a bookshop & I think “you aren’t thinking about how heavy book boxes are” - it is hard graft in a totally different way!
Or the story of the plumber who charges €75 for a 15 minute job - you are paying for the years of experience & skill which means that they know what it is, can fix it in 10 minutes and don’t need to tear up your tiles to do it!
Doesn’t say what the effort and skill is in!! Could be cheek and marketing!
I'm not going to claim skill, that's for others to judge. But I'm proud of the effort I put in, trying to be sure every paragraph made me smile or laugh when I was editing.

I think they are different experiences too! I did have an e-reader when they first came out & then a kindle - but I found I read differently & I missed the feel & texture of actual books.
There is a word for that! In Japanese, "tsundoku" refers to the act of collecting books and letting them accumulate, not as a result of neglect, but rather as a source of joy and anticipation, knowing that they hold untold stories waiting to be discovered.
For the weekend that is in it!!
I am all for not owning lots of ‘things’ - but books are not things!!

Totally agree. third spaces are essential, more than ever before, to counter the ‘atomisation’ of our communities. We need more than the pub. Third spaces foster human connection, meaning, help to re-create a sense of belonging. An alternative to online life and busy modern work-life imbalances

I think that in that respect the shop is the same - except we have more comfortable chairs! Bookshops as third spaces that foster community, conversation, belonging & also escape á la Ray Oldenburg are still so necessary.

It is the conversations & recommendations it has stolen. The unusual book that doesn’t match an algorithm, but that you know if you put it in the hands of the right reader will change something, & the people who come in for a chat or to see friendly faces - we longed for connection during Covid.
