I didnāt hit democratic transitions until upper division honors level courses in my major, and Iām realizing that maybe thatās not great. People should have an idea about what makes a democracy successful. Hint: itās not violence.

Thanks for saying this! It canāt be said enough! Nonviolent democratic transitions are the most effective and successful, despite being a seemingly less dramatic slow burn. A lot of people donāt realize this, and *want* violence, which results in autocracy & ethnic cleansing. Itās so frustrating!

Crime is literally lower than it has been in the entire life of every single non-senior-citizen American. If you are under age 65 you have never lived at a time with lower property crime rates, lower violent crime rates or lower homicide rates. Never.

Thatās what I thought from what you were describing. And I know people are terrible at this time of year without budget cuts, so thank you for what you do! I love our parks, theyāre a treasure!
And itās actually somewhat a different kind of bad behavior, but a lot of the time itās still the same assholes everywhere, if that makes sense. Some behavior will be specific, but mostly itās people being dumb, entitled, rude, drunk, on drugs, starting fires, letting kids/dogs run around, sucking.
And depending on the park, visitors can and will be belligerent jerks, especially at this time of year, or whatever the busy season is, and especially at the busiest parks, like Yellowstone, and parks in or near cities, like Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and where Iāve worked.
Parks with a lot of visitors have law enforcement rangers who carry a sidearm (and possibly a shotgun in their vehicle, usually for wildlife). They issue warnings & tickets to people who are doing something stupid/illegal theyāve already been told not to by other staff or thatās super dangerous.
Most US National Park rangers and US Forest Service employees are unarmed and responsible for educating visitors about wildlife, geology, and/or history in the park as well as fire prevention, trail restoration, fire & rescue, and park management. (my own experience, not speaking for @snarkranger)
Teachers and nurses do this on a daily basis, too. Anyone who has worked in retail or service has been threatened or intimidated, and at gas stations or liquor stores, it may be expected. Cleaners in offices and hotels are assaulted at higher rates than we know, because often they arenāt citizens.
I'm not talking about a fundamental rethinking of law enforcement. I'm talking about making their lives easier by making it so they don't have to respond to all the bs they do now
