Yes, If you are an Independent you are asked which ballot you want, R or D for primaries. General elections are the same ballot for all.

Depends on the state. My state of Ohio has open Primaries where I as an Independent only need to ask for the ballot of the party I want to vote for. Check to see if your state is an open or closed primary one.
