On this day in 2001, singer and actress Aaliyah is killed in a plane crush in the Bahamas. The entertainer had just wrapped filming scenes for a music video when her plane crash immediately after take off. Authorities later determined the plane was overloaded. She was 22 years old.

Today in history, 1934: the first set of civilian inmates arrive on Alcatraz. Initially built as a military prison, Alcatraz housed the “most dangerous” inmates from 1934 until its closure in 1963. It housed more 1,500 convicts in its nearly three decades of operation.

Today in 1965: President Lyndon Johnson signs the Social Security Amendments of 1965, establishing Medicare and Medicaid providing national health insurance for millions of Americans. The bill was part of Johnson’s domestic policy vision, known as The Great Society. 1/2

Today in history, 1868: the 14th amendment to the Constitution was ratified. Extending the protections spelled out in the Bill of Rights to the formerly enslaved, the 14th Amendment also officially established birthright citizenship. I covered the 14th Amendment last year on the pod - 1/2

Today in history, 1853: California Rangers kill and behead a man they believe to be Joaquín Murrieta. Murrieta was a Gold Rush era bandit who had a $6,000 bounty put on his head by the state legislature. The Rangers preserved the head by putting it in a vat of whiskey.

Today in history, 1885: 18th President Ulysses S. Grant dies. The Civil War hero who tried to protect Black civil rights throughout the south, Grant served two terms before leaving office in 1876. I dedicated several episodes to President Grant - check them out if you haven’t already.

Today in history, 1934: John Dillinger is killed by authorities. Born in 1903, Dillinger is known for robbing 24 banks & led the “Dillinger Gang.” Dillinger influence the evolution of what became the FBI to leverage more sophisticated techniques against crime.
