So I guess my digressions about the Battle of Bosworth Field, Schroedinger’s cat, and Diogenes on Monday have made me fireable.
A producer called and asked if we had school safety videos to share. She gave us her FedEx billing number and promised to send the VHS tapes back (this was the year 2000 before DVD and streaming). I looked through our library and specifically sent this one that made the cut.
My first job out of college was at the National Center for School Safety. I filed papers. I sent Michael Moore some school-industrial-safety sales videos that made it into Bowling for Columbine. And what I learned was that if kids feel safe at school, they will be safe.
When my son was younger, we used to play "Marco! Rubio!" in the pool and it turns out it's evergreen.
And such competition can even allow for authoritarian consolidation as a regime uses the cudgel of anti-corruption drives to purge its rivals.
Yet competition among corrupt elites can make it challenge to rebuild institutions and deliver on reform, as the case of Sri Lanka in the last three years shows.
A shared experience of corrupt exploitation creates the potential for sudden protest and widespread mobilization. When institutional corruption exists, it allows protestors to identify the regime as a target for their ire.
While the spark for the fiery protests in Nepal was a social media ban, a long-standing problem of corruption, inequality, and elite indifference are catalyzing mechanisms. As @mladabee.bsky.social and I have argued, such protests cascade very quickly because of shared grievances.

I have to admit that Notebook LLM accomplishes this task quite well. That's cool and all...but the point of this exercise is for discrete humans to LEARN how to read a sophisticated article and summarize it THEMSELVES, because developing this skill enables THEM to become knowledge producers.
It is Junior’s university after all.
For 15 yrs, I’ve co-organized informal, volunteer, peer mentoring for women in my college to help them navigate being outnumbered in dept, sexist colleagues, or professing while pregnant. We’ve been told to stop b/c it’s exclusionary. No word on if sr men vs jr men’s tennis matches also cancelled.
