Why don’t more Democrats get this? Pundits tsking you is not the most important thing to worry about. If someone on TV says Democrats are “losing a shutdown,” that means basically nothing. A big chunk of the public, and now even the government, thinks that everything is the president’s doing.
One underdiscussed part of the shutdown fight is that Trump has created an impression that he controls the whole government, so if it shuts down and he has to blame Democrats for not giving him money he needs, it pops that entire aura. If the dictator can't run things people will blame the dictator.

I've a thought I can't quite articulate, but it's something like: how do you rebuild the system when this regime falls- as it will, eventually - when the thing you need to rebuild is adherence to law, the very adherence to which will prevent you from fixing the things these people broke.
